Christine de Bruin , born Christine Bushie (born March 3, 1989 in Edmonton ), is a Canadian bobsleigh driver . She started for Canada at the 2018 Winter Olympics . Together with her pusher Kristen Bujnowski , she won the bronze medal in the women's two-man bobsleigh at the Bobsleigh and Skeleton World Championships in 2018 and 2019 .

Career

The former track and field athlete switched to bobsleigh at the age of 22 and was initially active as a pusher. She completed her first international competition on December 8, 2012 in the Bobsleigh World Cup 2012/13 at the team competition in Winterberg . She was active as a pusher for Jennifer Ciochetti and her team took seventh place at the end of the competition. Shortly after this competition, she began retraining to become a pilot and she made her debut in the North American Bobsleigh Cup in the 2012/13 season . In her first competition on March 8, 2013, she and her push- puller Alysia Rissling took fourth place in Lake Placid . A day later, the two finished eighth in the second competition in Lake Placid. After the two starts, she finished 16th in the overall ranking of the North American Cup with 176 points.

In the 2013/14 season , she continued as a driver in the North American Bobsleigh Cup and was able to take her first podium on January 9, 2014. Together with her pusher Melissa Lowe , she took second place behind the bob by Fabiana Santos and ahead of the bob by Kim Sunok . At the end of the season she finished fifth with 478 points in the overall standings of the North American Cup. In addition, at the end of the season, she started for the first time in the Bobsleigh Junior World Championship and finished ninth together with her pusher Kate Obrien .

After she only finished seventh in the overall standings of the Bobsleigh North America Cup with 452 points in the 2014/15 season , she was able to clinch her first victory in the North American Cup 2015/16 at the first race of the season. Together with her pusher, Cynthia Appiah , she won in Calgary on November 9, 2015 in front of the bobsleds of Alysia Rissling and Nicole Vogt . The following day, the two also won the second competition in Calgary ahead of Brittany Reinbolt and Alysia Rissling 's bobsleighs . The two took their third win in a row on November 26, 2015 at the Whistler Sliding Center , winning ahead of Alysia Rissling and Lee Seonhye . The following day, Christine de Bruin and Cynthia Appiah's series broke and they both had to be content with fourth place. With these four good results, she collected 456 points and at the end of the season she finished eighth overall.

On January 29, 2016, Christine de Bruin completed a competition in Europe for the first time and took eleventh place in the European Cup race at the Olympia Bobrun St. Moritz – Celerina with her pusher Janine McCue . Due to her good results, especially in the North American Cup, she qualified for the 2016 Bobsleigh World Championships , which took place on the Igls bobsleigh rink . At her first world championship, she finished 16th in the women's two-man bobsleigh after four runs. In addition, she was in the team competition and took tenth place with the second Canadian team. On February 21, 2016, she took part in Innsbruck as Alysia Rissling's pusher in the Exhibition Race for the women's four-man bobsleigh and Alysia Rissling's bobsleigh took second place.

At the beginning of the 2016/17 season , Christine de Bruin started in the North American Cup and took third place in Calgary on November 12, 2016 together with her pusher Genevieve Thibault behind the bobs of Alysia Rissling and Mica Mcneill . Christine de Bruin made her debut in the Bobsleigh World Cup on December 3, 2012 and took twelfth place in her competition together with Genevieve Thibault at the Whistler Sliding Center . On December 16, 2016 she was able to achieve a top ten placement in the World Cup for the first time. Together with her pusher Catherine Medeiros , she took eighth place in Lake Placid . She qualified for a bobsleigh world championship for the second time and started at the 2017 bobsleigh world championship with Genevieve Thibault as a pusher. The two finished in 13th place after four runs. In the team competition she started together with her husband Ivo de Bruin in one of two international teams and finished 11th with them. After the World Cup, the World Cup in Pyeongchang , where the Olympic Games will be held in the following season , was on the agenda. Together with Genevieve Thibault, she took 17th place in the competition. At the end of the season she finished 16th in the overall World Cup with 688 points.

At the start of the Olympic season, she finished sixth in Lake Placid in the first World Cup race of the season on November 9, 2017 . At the end of the season she finished tenth in the overall World Cup with 1,022 points and was nominated by the Canadian Olympic Committee for the 2018 Winter Olympics alongside Kaillie Humphries and Alysia Rissling . In the Olympic two-man bobsleigh competition, she competed with her push-puller Melissa Lotholz . After four runs in the Olympic Sliding Center, Christine de Bruin and Melissa Lotholz rounded off the good team result with seventh place as the third-best Canadian.

After taking two fourth places in the North America Cup in Whistler in the 2018/19 season , Christine de Bruin won together with her push-puller Kristen Bujnowski in front of Laura Nolte and Christin Senkel's two bobsleds at the European Cup race in Altenberg . On December 12, 2018, she started the monobob event on the Königssee artificial ice rink and won it ahead of Breeana Walker and Anastasiia Makarova . On December 15, 2012, she and Kristen Bujnowski took second place in the European Cup race in Königssee behind Christin Senkel's bobsleigh and in front of Alysia Rissling's bobsleigh .

With the World Cup in Altenberg, Christine de Bruin started the World Cup season together with Kristen Bujnowski and were able to set an exclamation mark right away. Behind the bob Mariama Jamanka and ahead of Elana Meyers Taylor's bob , the two finished second on January 5, 2019. The two Canadians were able to confirm their second place at the World Cup in Lake Placid when they finished second behind Elana Meyers Taylor's bob and in front of Stephanie Schneider's bob on February 15, 2019 . At the end of the season she finished 13th in the overall World Cup with 564 points, which she was able to collect in three season competitions. At the home world championships in Whistler , Christine de Bruin and Kristen Bujnowski were also able to confirm their strong performances from the World Cup and won the bronze medal behind the two German bobsleds by Mariama Jamanka and Stefanie Schneider. In the team competition, she also won the silver medal with the Canadian team.

At the beginning of the 2019/20 season, Christine de Bruin started in the North American Bobsleigh Cup and was able to win the first race of the season in Lake Placid ahead of the bobsleighs from Kaillie Humphries , who no longer competes for Canada, but for the USA, and Martina Fontanive win. A day later, in the second race at Lake Placid, she finished second behind the bob of Kaillie Humphries and in front of the bob of Brittany Reinbolt . After she finished fifth at the first World Cup of the season in Lake Placid on December 7, 2019, together with her pusher Dawn Richardson Wilson , she started on December 14, 2019 with her regular pusher Kristen Bujnowski and the two of them were behind the bobs of Kaillie Humphries and Kim Kallicki occupy third place.

At the World Cup in La Plagne , Christine de Bruin and Kristen Bujnowski took her second podium of the season and on January 11, 2020, she finished second behind Laura Nolte's bobsleigh and in front of Stephanie Schneider's bobsleigh . At the end of the season, she finished third in the overall World Cup for the 2019/20 season with 1,514 points behind the two German bobsleigh pilots Stephanie Schneider and Mariama Jamanka . At the 2020 Bobsleigh and Skeleton World Championships , which took place in Altenberg , she started in the women's two-man bobsleigh together with Kristen Bujnowski, just like the year before. In the fourth and decisive run, the two of them were able to push past Mariama Jamanka's bobsleigh and for the second time secure the bronze medal behind the bobs of Kaillie Humphries and Kim Kalicki .
