The Chutzenturm is a 45 m high observation tower on the 820 m high Frienisberg hill , between Bern and Lake Biel in the canton of Bern in Switzerland .

Location

The currently (2019) tallest wooden tower in Switzerland is located in the eponymous Chutzen area on the wooded Frienisberg in the community of Seedorf . The Chutzenturm can be reached on foot or by bike from the north from the Försterstein car park - above the village of Frienisberg - on Hauptstrasse 236 Aarberg - Bern and from the Rungelenbaum car park above Baggwil and from the south from the village of Wahlendorf in the municipality of Meikirch .

Building

After several years of planning, construction began in summer 2009 for the foundation of the structure and from April 2010 for the wooden tower with its 234 steps and three viewing platforms ; each at 15 meters, 30 meters and the highest at 40 meters or 859 m above sea level. M. After a year of construction, the observation tower was opened on June 26, 2010 and opened to the public.

With a total weight of the tower of 537 tons, 460 m³ of Douglas fir logs from the Frienisberg forests and 427 tons (175 m 3 ) of concrete and 12 tons of steel were used for the 11 × 11 m foundation with reinforcement . The steps are made of oak (5.5 m 3 ), which comes from the forests around Siselen in the Bernese Seeland.

To cover the total cost of CHF 980'000 which received sponsorship club Chutzenturm donations and grants from lottery funds , municipalities and private as well as benefits in the form of volunteering.
