Colby Cave (born December 26, 1994 in North Battleford , Saskatchewan ; † April 11, 2020 in Toronto , Ontario ) was a Canadian ice hockey player who played 67 games for the Boston Bruins and Edmonton Oilers in the National Hockey League between 2011 and 2020 (NHL) contested on the position of the center . Most of his career, however, spent Cave in the American Hockey League (AHL), where he completed over 300 games for the Providence Bruins and Bakersfield Condors .

Career

Cave initially spent his junior years until spring 2011 with various teams from the region of his hometown North Battleford in the province of Saskatchewan . Among other things, he was active for the Battlefords North Stars in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL). For the 2011/12 season he was committed by the Swift Current Broncos from the Western Hockey League (WHL). The center forward had already played a game for them last year after his transfer rights were transferred from the Kootenay Ice to the Broncos in January 2011 . Ice had already acquired these rights as part of the 2009 WHL Bantam Draft . Already in his rookie season , Cave was part of the roster and achieved 15 points in 70 appearances . He was able to increase this yield in the following three years from 41 over 70 to finally 75 points in his fourth and final WHL year. In his last two seasons he served as the team's captain .

After Cave had not been considered by the National Hockey League (NHL) franchises in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft , he received a contract offer from the Boston Bruins from the NHL in April 2015 as an undrafted free agent . For their farm team , the Providence Bruins , from the American Hockey League (AHL), the attacker made his professional debut at the end of the 2014/15 season . At the beginning of the 2015/16 season , Cave was a permanent part of the Bruins' squad in the AHL and was one of the assistant captains from the following season. In December 2017, the attacker finally made his debut for the Boston Bruins in the NHL, two more missions followed in April 2018. Then the Canadian was back in Providence's squad before he managed to get a regular place in the Boston NHL squad from November 2018. When trying to send him back to the AHL in January 2019 via the so-called waiver , he was selected by the Edmonton Oilers , who took over his contract. With the Oilers, Cave played 33 games over the rest of the season. However, he spent most of the 2019/20 season again in the AHL with their farm team Bakersfield Condors , so that 44 appearances for Bakersfield were compared to eleven appearances in the Oilers' jersey.

On April 7, 2020, the Canadian had to undergo emergency surgery to remove a colloid cyst as a result of an overnight cerebral hemorrhage . As a result, Cave was placed in an artificial coma from which he could no longer awaken. He died four days later on April 11, 2020 in Toronto at the age of 25.
