Columbia Gorge AVA (recognized since May 10, 2004) is a wine-growing region in the US states of Oregon and Washington . The area extends to the administrative areas of Hood River County and Wasco Counties (both in Oregon) and Skamania and Klickitat in Washington.

Due to the abundance of different microclimates and different soils in the Columbia River Gorge , new growing conditions arise within a very short distance, which are often summarized under the name terroir . The wine-growing region is therefore often advertised with the slogan "world of wine in 40 miles".

geography

The wine region extends from Hood River and White Salmon in the west to Biggs Junction and Goldendale in the east. In addition to the valley of the Columbia River, parts of the tributary valleys of the Hood River and the Deschutes River in the Oregon area, and the Klickitat River and the Little Klickitat River in the Washington area also belong to the protected designation of origin .

The region lies east of the Mount Hood and Mount Adams volcanoes and thus in the lee of the Cascade Range , which protects the area from excessive rainfall. Despite the high values, the amount of precipitation is significantly lower than in Portland further west . The annual rainfall varies from a high 910 mm in the west of the wine-growing area to a low 250 mm in the east. The climatic diversity allows winemakers to grow a wide range of grape varieties .
