Cosmo Francesco Ruppi (born June 6, 1932 in Alberobello , † May 29, 2011 in Locorotondo ) was Archbishop of Lecce .

Life

Cosmo Francesco Ruppi studied at the seminaries of Conversano and Molfetta. He graduated from the University of Bari in Education and in History and Literature . The Bishop of Conversano , Gregorio Falconieri , ordained Cosmo Francesco Ruppi on December 18, 1954 . He first taught the humanities at the seminar in Conversano . In 1961 he was appointed professor at the Seminari Pontifici dalla Congregazione (olim) . Shortly afterwards he was appointed associate professor for the history of philosophy and the theory of philosophy. In 1962 he became a full professor of philosophy and didactics, psychology, sociology and political economy at the Pontifical Faculty for Southern Italy ( Pontificia Facoltà Teologica dell'Italia Meridionale PFTIM) and at the Molfetta Theological Institute in Apulia ( Istituto Teologico "Regina Apuliae" di Molfetta ). In 1969 he founded the Istituto Superiore di Teologia Ecumenica together with the Archbishop of Bari, Enrico Nicodemo , and was its first general secretary. In 1964 he became deputy secretary of the regional Italian bishops' conference of Apulia and in 1967 director of the Istituto Pastorale Pugliese .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Termoli and Larino on May 13, 1980 . The Archbishop of Naples , Cardinal Corrado Ursi , donated him episcopal ordination on June 29 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Guglielmo Motolese , Archbishop of Taranto and Bishop of Castellaneta , and Antonio D'Erchia , Bishop of Conversano and Bishop of Monopoli .

With the union of the dioceses of Termoli and Larino on September 30, 1986, he became the first bishop of Termoli-Larino . He was appointed Archbishop of Lecce on December 7, 1988, and was introduced to office on January 29 of the next year.

From June 8, 1999 to January 29, 2008, he was chairman of the regional Italian bishops' conference of Apulia. He was a member of the 2001 Synod of Bishops in Rome.

He was prior of the Lecce Commandery of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem for over 20 years . Ruppi has worked as a writer for various newspapers, including L'Osservatore Romano . He was a member of the Historical Society of Puglia and published some monographs and historical essays.

Pope Benedict XVI took his age-related resignation . on April 16, 2009. Ruppi died in a nursing home in Locorotondo in 2011.
