history

Oesono is the seat of the traditional rulers ( Usif ) of Oe-Cusse , who are now represented by the Costas family . The empire took the coast and east of Oe-Cusse Ambeno . From 1912 the Costas were also superior to the ruler of Ambeno in the west and south of the exclave. Until the Hornay family died out, a small river in the city divided the territories of the two Topassic dynasties . Thereafter, the territory of the Costas expanded to Lifau in the west.

During the riots of 1999 that followed the independence referendum , Pante Macassar was the target of pro-Indonesian militias supported by the Indonesian military.

On August 27, members of the Besi Merah Putih and Sakunar militias pelted the office of the CNRT , the umbrella organization of the East Timorese freedom movement, with stones all night and the following day . When the CNRT requested police protection, the Indonesian police positioned themselves behind the militia and opened fire on the CNRT office. Six people were killed. The building was completely destroyed, other buildings in neighboring Santa Rosa burned down. On September 18, houses were arbitrarily set on fire in Pante Macassar. Only two Catholic churches and the town of Mahata were spared. Over 5000 people gathered in a refugee camp in Cutete under the protection of the American pastor Richard Daschbach . There they were attacked by the Sakunar on September 23. The accommodations were burned down, two people were shot and the refugees were driven away. The 14-year-old Fredolino José Landos da Cruz Buno Sila (Lafu) then walked from Cutete through the Indonesian West Timor to East Timor to inform the UN authorities there about the conditions in Oe-Cusse Ambeno, whereupon the international intervention force INTERFET was used to restore peace and order in the exclave as well.
