Cover Me is Nena's 15th studio album, released on September 28, 2007, and is also the name of the associated tour. With the exception of Open Your Eyes , the double album only contains cover versions by other artists, some of which have also been translated into German. A wide range of international artists such as Marlene Dietrich and the Rolling Stones are covered .
content
Cover Me mainly consists of cover versions of 31 selected classics, but also more current English and German-language pieces.
The double album includes reinterpretations of songs by different artists and bands such as Bob Dylan , Neil Young , Peter Gabriel , The Cure , Pink Floyd , Moby , Air as well as Udo Lindenberg , Ulla Meinecke , DAF , Rammstein , Die Fantastischen Vier or Klee as well as the already mentioned Rolling Stones and Marlene Dietrich.
Nena commented on the song selection as follows:
“They are all songs that move something in me. There is an intense relationship with every piece. Some give me strength, others are important memories. Still others confront me with my thinking patterns. Some of these songs make me cry, others make me laugh. Some of the songs have been with me for over 30 years. They "cover" me in all situations. We just had a lot of fun getting inspired by these songs and interpreting them in our own way. With a lot of respect and love we approached all of these wonderful and important songs and gave them a NENA dress. "
While the German tracks were produced by Derek von Krogh , Philipp Palm and Nena himself, the English-language tracks were produced by Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen , the former composer and keyboard player of the Nena formation . Nena was composer, lyricist and co-producer only on the first single, Mach die Augen , which also served as the title song of the Pro7 climate protection campaign CO2NTRA - Protecting the climate with Galileo .
Receptions
Thomas Winkler wrote in Spiegel Online : “She confidently combines the rhetoric of hit songs with the aesthetics of rock and translates the outdated heart-pain romanticism into the flowery language of modern New Age activists. This modernized emotional fuss fits in the back seat of a motorcycle as well as in the belly dance studio, wherever people look for support and orientation. ”Daniela Reichert considers the album to be only halfway audible and commented critically in laut.de :“ Nena shows how difficult it can be to cover demanding songs or classics. What she's doing here is just plain cruel. Two things stand out in particular: a lack of creativity, which sounds almost too nice for the loveless arrangements of the songs, and a merciless overestimation of one's own vocal abilities. "
