After the great success of the self-titled debut album , the single 99 balloons next to number one in the German charts and second place in the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States had reached, the band went to the end of the tour from October to December 1983 returned to the studio to record the follow-up album.

The recordings took place in the Spliff studio in West Berlin ; Manfred Praeker and Reinhold Heil , who had already produced the debut album, took over the production again . The saxophone at ? (Question Mark) and Let Me Be Your Pirate was recorded by Dave Sanborn at A&R Studios in New York City, USA. Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen took over the lead vocals for the title Das Land der Elefanten . The album cover was designed by Jim Rakete and Roman Stolz.

reception

The album reached the top of the charts in Germany , Austria and Switzerland , the first single ? (Question mark) the top ten in these three countries ( number one in Switzerland ). The second release, Save me , did not make it into the top ten in any of the three countries, the ballad-like Let me be your pirate only made it to 53rd place in Germany and did not appear in Austria or Switzerland at all.

Alan Severa wrote on the Allmusic.com website that the album's “soft atmosphere” made it a specialty among the Nena albums. Despite the lack of musical appeal, the title track has become an anthem for Nena fans. He awarded four out of five stars.
