Crunk

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Crunk is a sub-genre of hip hop that originated in the southern United States, particularly the Atlanta, Georgia area . Crunk combines elements of Dirty South , electronic dance music and bass music into a hard, aggressive, but club-friendly sound. This genre is characteristic of the trap, which is very popular today .

The founder and first commercially successful artists in the early 1990s were Three 6 Mafia , Lil Jon with Get Crunk, Who U Wit: Da Album , and Master P . Crunk reached the German mainstream audience in 2004 when the single Yeah! of the R'n'B singer Usher , which was produced by Lil Jon, was number 1 in the German charts for four weeks.

Crunk is simply produced: it is mostly based on drum machine- generated synth rhythms (especially the use of a Roland TR-808 ) and strongly accentuated, deep bass . Simple keyboard and synthesizer sounds (often garish tones on newer tracks, as is usually the case with uplifting trance ) are added as sound effects. These instrumentals are used to rap , sing and - especially typical for crunk - yell.

The term crunk comes from the English “crazy” and “drunk” (drunk). The exclamation “Get Crunk”, on the other hand, comes from the word Crank “... because if you are already Crank you can also be Crunk.” (Quote from the film “Hustle & Flow”). This exclamation is often brought together with “Get Buck”, ie “Get Crunk, Get Buck”; for example in the song by “Al Kapone” a well-known crunk rapper: “Get Crunk, Get Buck” or by Lil Scrappy in “No Problem”.
