Cyrus Habib (born August 22, 1981 in Baltimore , Maryland ) is an American politician . In November 2016 he was appointed Deputy Governor of the State of Washington selected. He officially took office on January 11, 2017.

Career

Cyrus Habib is the son of a family from Iran who immigrated to the USA . He survived three cancers and lost his eyesight when he was eight. Since then he has been completely blind. A short time after he went blind, the family moved to Bellevue, Washington State, where he graduated from the International School in 1999 . He then studied at Columbia University in New York City . During this time he gained his first political experience while working in the New York office of then US Senator Hillary Clinton . He then continued his education by studying at the University of Oxford in England. After a subsequent law degree at Yale University and his admission to the bar, he began to work in Washington State in this profession. Since 2013 he also taught law at the Law School of Seattle University .

Politically, Habib joined the Democratic Party . Between 2013 and 2015 he was a member of the Washington House of Representatives ; since 2015 he has been a member of the State Senate . In 2016 he successfully applied for the post of lieutenant governor of his state. In this capacity, he replaced Brad Owen on January 11, 2017 . He is the representative of Governor Jay Inslee and Chairman of the State Senate. Habib is the first US politician of Iranian descent to hold such a high office at the state level. In March 2020, he declared that he would not seek re-election, but would join the Jesuits at the end of his term in early 2021 .
