Guest Posts

For DNA , songs were created together with the rappers Kollegah , Sido and MoTrip as well as the American hip-hop musician RZA of the group Wu-Tang Clan . The collaboration with Kollegah, who like Genetikk is under contract with Selfmade Records , was " demanded from the start " by fans of the label, according to Karuzo . However, in the production phase it was " not a dogma " to let a label colleague appear as a guest rapper. With MoTrip, the duo had already released the piece Keiner hier ist Rap in 2012 .

Versions

DNA was published in four different versions. The Standard Edition includes 18 songs. The Premium Edition also features the four bonus titles Kill Karuzo , Wahyo , Ich bin Ghetto and Out Out Out . Another version was released through iTunes under the title iTunes Deluxe Edition . This contains all pieces and the corresponding instrumentals as well as three music videos and a digital booklet. A limited edition in the form of a black box was also released via the online retailer Amazon . This contains the 22 album titles and the instrumentals on two CDs. In addition, the limited-edition box contains a t-shirt, a hand-signed autograph card of the duo and four stickers.

Extract from the video on DNA

On April 25, 2013, DNA, the first music video for the album, was released. This was created under the direction of Markus and Michael Weicker, who were also responsible for production and editing. Another music video for the track Champions was released in mid-May . The third video was the implementation of the song Über Alles . With Yes Sir , another music video was released on July 24, 2013. The recordings were made on July 12, 2013 as part of the duo's performance at the Splash hip-hop and reggae festival .

For the German hip-hop magazine Juice , Genetikk presented the song rule of this game as a so-called Juice Exclusive! ready for the 116th Juice CD. A snippet was published on June 10, 2013 , in which the tracks from the album DNA are alluded to. The joint song with Sido Liebs was also released or posted on the YouTube video portal . The song was included in the programs of various radio stations, including 1 Live , and released on July 12, 2013 in the form of an EP on iTunes. In addition to Liebs oder lass es , this also contains the piece Let's Go , on which the American rapper Method Man is represented, as well as the instrumental versions of both songs. In mid-September a remix of the track Represent was released by Johnny Illstrument . Another music video was released on December 31, 2013 for the piece Everything possible . Recordings from the duo's Hamburg concert on December 9, 2013 were used for the video.

Visual implementation

Masking

After Genetikk had only made up appearances in the course of the release of the albums Foetus and Voodoo circus , Sikk and Karuzo began to wear masks on the cover and the videos for DNA as well as at all public appearances such as concerts and interviews . These were made by the Berlin artist Sonja Dissberger. Karuzo emphasizes the importance of optics in interviews. So the human being is a " visual being " who does not only perceive the music audibly. In addition, the staging, for example within Indian tribes, has always been part of music. The masks also act as privacy protection.

reception

success

DNA entered the German album charts at number 1 . This makes it the second album by the Selfmade Records label that achieved the highest ranking in Germany. According to the director of the independent label Elvir Omerbegovic , 30,000 units of DNA were sold in the first week. In a statement, Omerbegovic highlighted the sales figures of what he believed to be " not adapted to the mainstream album " as a success. Also in the second week, DNA was able to hold position 10 in the top 10 of the charts. It was ranked 13th and 17th in the third and fourth week. In Austria, the album entered 4th place. With number 5, DNA was also able to position itself in the Swiss album charts.

In 2014 the album was awarded IMPALA Gold by the European independent label association Impala for over 75,000 copies sold .

The single release Liebs oder lass es was able to place itself in the German top 100 single charts with rank 33.

Reviews of the music media

Genetikk on the cover of the June issue of the hip-hop magazine "Juice" (2013)

In the run-up to its release, the German hip-hop magazine Juice wrote a cover story on genetics and DNA . The album is described as a “ modern hip-hop classic ” and placed in connection with other influential rap albums. So be DNA the contemporary translation of the " best elements " of albums Battle Kings of West Maskulin , God's work and Creutz field contribution from Creutzfeld & Jakob , deluxe sound system of Dynamite Deluxe , mask of Sido and pimp tapes of Kollegah .

The Laut.de e-zine rated DNA with four out of a possible five evaluation points. DNA is " in contrast to their already brutally entertaining " album Voodoo circus " by worlds more sophisticated, more thoughtful, much more from a single source. "From the point of view of the editor Dani Fromm, the publication“ with its story of a very special 'species' temporarily stranded on this planet ” " is almost a concept album. The rapper Karuzo is praised for his " technical skills " and " flowering imagination ". On the other hand, the rapper's voice and his “ sometimes riotous presentation ” depend on the listener's taste. According to Fromm, the guest contributions from RZA and MoTrip are inconspicuous. In the case of the piece Liebs oder lass recorded together with Sido, it is “ by far the weakest track ” on the album. Only Kollegah's contribution appears to be “ meaningful ”, since it can be heard “ once again [on] a decent beat ” through the collaboration . Sikk's productions are positively highlighted by Fromm. These are characterized by " powerful [...] basses [...], crazy [...] clinking of keys, hymnic [...] passages, shimmering [...] strings and pressing [...] synths ". In the list of the 50 best albums of the year, which was voted by 45 according to the editors, DNA took eleventh place, in the list of the 25 best hip-hop albums even third.

In his review for Rap.de, Phil Weichert praised the “ amalgamation of different styles and motifs ”, which has made DNAincredibly versatile and interesting ”. In connection with this, the website awarded the publication eight out of a possible ten points. The introductory intro convinces with “ powerful bass, popping snares and scratches ”. The pieces Species , Yes Sir and Packets in the Boots are also highlighted positively. Through the " countless allusions and references to classics and former hits " Genetikk shows her love for hip-hop culture. According to Weichert, the weaker half of the album begins with Lieb es oder lass es . The “ typical radio single ” is characterized by a banal text and a solid contribution from Sido. Only the song Strawberry Fields reached the level of the first half of the album. Kappa Alpha Rho and Outro , on the other hand, are shallow, whereby MoTrip's appearance is also criticized negatively. In summary, the " few failures " do not prevent the duo from recording a " masterpiece " with DNA .

The website Hiphop.de gave the album a rating of 7.25 out of a possible ten points. DNA is an “ innovative and coherent album with above-average challenging battlerap lyrics. “Stylistically, the album can be classified“ between 2Pac and Nate57 , Mobb Deep and Favorite ”. However, neither the punchlines in Karuzo's lyrics nor the rapper's flow are among the most creative in the hip-hop scene. Genetikk's music is characterized by “ Karuzo's distinctive voice, the many excursions into Spanish language skills ” and “ the precisely timed rhymes [and] the solid flow ”. Champions , Represent and Everything Possible are positively highlighted in the review. Also Liebs or leave it is called the great and for the " very good Sido-Partenkirchen " praised. On the other hand, the piece Du bist weg , whose rhythm is annoying due to the " shifted claps that have been set to the offbeats of beats two and four, " is one of the two low points of the album. The guest appearance of RZA is the second. In terms of content, DNA turns out to be “ rather lighter food. "In summary, the editor Erich Unrau describes the masking of the duo as a" pushing element. "

Comments from news magazines

In addition to reviews by music media, news magazines also published articles on the album's release. Aleksandar Jozvaj wrote a report for Spiegel Online . In his opinion, Genetikk “manages the balancing act between an innovative, original style and subtle musical borrowings from the time when you started nodding your head. “Sikk's productions are characterized by the use of“ unconventional samples ”. Karuzo flaunts “ hip-hop-typical around ” in his lyrics , but dispenses with “ sexisms ”. In the lyrics, the hip-hop musician makes it clear that rap “ mainly lives from irony ”. In addition , Karuzo “ stretches, strains and distorts ” in his lecture “ the sound of his words. "

Dennis Sand explained on Welt Online that Genetikk's sound “ creates a link between the past, future and present of a culture that has remained true to its misunderstood awareness of tradition [...] to this day ”. The duo deal with " soul , jazz [and] Ray Charles ", sample these influences and develop a sound that is " visionary and at the same time [...] classic ". In addition to the musical component, Genetikk represents an " overall lifestyle that is visually defined by its color-reduced vintage video aesthetics ". In conclusion, Sand expresses his opinion that the duo represent “ the great common denominator of these […] conflicting and incompatible cultures ” within the hip-hop scene, which is differentiated into “ emo over gangsta and party rap ” .

Reviews of other artists

The rapper Tone spoke to Jetzt.de , the online magazine of the Süddeutsche Zeitung , about Genetikk's album. He praised the duo's ability to tell stories. Karuzo's rap technique and the serious attitude towards music, which sets Genetikk apart from rappers such as MC Fitti , are also highlighted. On the other hand, the beats of the songs are " a bit too monotonous " and " overall too backward- looking " for him " over the entire season ".
