The Dachstein ice cave is located a few minutes from the Schönbergalm near Obertraun in the UNESCO World Heritage area of Hallstatt - Dachstein / Salzkammergut . It contains 13,000 m³ of ice with a surface area of 5,000 m². In some parts of the cave, such as the Tristan Dome, the ice thickness reaches 20 meters. Pollen analyzes suggest that the ice was around 500 years old.

history

According to a legend that is probably not true, the Obertrauner Peter Gamsjäger discovered the ice cave in 1897 in search of lost cattle. However, it is likely that the cave was known to the locals long before that. On July 17, 1910, the cave explorers Hanna and Hermann Bock from Brno and Georg Lahner from Linz managed to penetrate deeper into the cave for the first time by overcoming the Great Ice Abyss ; this day is therefore the official time of discovery.

Guided tours have also been offered since 1912. The cave was equipped with electric lighting as early as 1928, and a new entrance was opened in 1952.

tourism

The cave can be visited in the summer months. The highlights of the one-hour tour are the ice chapel and the Grail Castle . Warm clothing and sturdy shoes with non-slip soles are recommended. There is also the Dachstein Mammut Cave on the Schönbergalm and the Koppenbrüller Cave in the valley , which can also be visited.

natural reserve

In Austria, caves are in principle (ex-lege) under strict nature protection. This cave was declared a natural monument in 1973 ( nd597 , nature conservation book: OÖ-63 / Obertraun). The area lies in the core zone of the UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape of Hallstatt – Dachstein / Salzkammergut  ( WHS 806 ) and in the Dachstein European and nature reserve ( bird protection and FFH area , AT3101000 / EU02 ; n098 ).
