action

The three sons of a farmer go to their wheat field in the evening and find the grain trampled down. Ivan, the youngest, moves along the Rain to discover the culprit, while his brothers sleep contrary to their promise to keep watch. A wondrous horse appears to the boy, roaming through the wheat and trying to catch it. It puts him on his back and flies with him through the air. Since Ivan shows no fear, the wondrous animal promises him a reward. He receives two magnificent horses and a third, which has two humps and drooping ears, but is magical.

The next morning the older brothers find the two beautiful horses in the stable and steal them immediately. The hunchbacked horse promises help to the sad Ivan and rides away with him. In a forest they find a feather of the fabulous firebird , which Ivan takes despite the horse's warnings.

Meanwhile, it is market day in the city . The tsar sees the beautiful horses here and wants to buy them from the brothers. Ivan joins them, reveals himself to be the true owner and sells the animals for a good price. He leaves the gold to his brothers. The tsar's stable master, however, is unable to tame the animals, so Ivan has to catch them, whereupon the office is transferred to him.

The former stable master secretly swears revenge. After noticing that Ivan has a firebird's feather, he reveals it to the tsar. He wants to take possession of the wondrous animal and sends Iwan out. The horse takes him to a forest where the birds can be found. Thanks to a trick, the boy can take possession of one of the animals and, to the delight of the tsar, brings it to the court.

Shortly afterwards, the former stable master hears an old man's story about a beautiful girl who is said to be a daughter of the sun. He offers this to his master, who sends Ivan for the beautiful woman. With the horse he travels to the coast, where both set up a splendid tent and prepare exquisite dishes in it. The girl lets herself be lured and is robbed by Ivan.

The tsar is pleased, but the beautiful woman shows no interest in him. As a condition, she ultimately stipulates that her ring, which lies at the bottom of the ocean, is brought over. Ivan has to undress again and rides to the sea again. There he sees a whale that has been lying quietly on the surface of the water for 10 years, so that people are already settling on its back. The boy learns from the horse that the whale is cursed because it once devoured 30 ships. Ivan persuades the settlers to leave the back of the animal, who then spits the ships and crew free again. The whale has now been freed from the curse and gives Ivan the ring as a thank you.

The beautiful woman makes one last condition for the marriage. The tsar is supposed to rejuvenate himself by bathing one after the other in boiling hot milk, then in equally hot water and finally in cold water. The former stable master again persuades the ruler to send Ivan. When he refuses, he is captured and the former stable master brings the hunchbacked horse into his power. Shortly before Iwan is forced to do the rehearsal, however, it is able to free itself and helps him to get out of the last cauldron as a beautiful young man in noble robe. The tsar now jumps into the hot milk himself, but dies in it.

In the end, Ivan and the beautiful get married.
