Jacques Loursat is a retired lawyer who became an alcoholic after the death of his wife. He has not spoken to his daughter Isabelle, who lives in his house, for ten years. When he comes home one day, he hears a gunshot and finds someone dead in his house. The pistol with which this person was shot can be found at a friend of Isabelle's. Jacques awakens from his lethargy and begins to defend Isabelle's friend in court.
