The road to Salina (original title: La Route de Salina ) is a French - Italian film drama by Georges Lautner from 1970. The literary model was the novel Sur la route de Salina by Maurice Cury .

action

The young tramp Jonas wanders aimlessly on the road to Salina in hot Mexico . He stops at a small rest stop to take a sip of water. He is observed by Mara, the owner of the estate, and received as her son Rocky, who has been missing for four years. Jonas leaves her tired and hungry in the mistaken belief that she is her son and accepts her offer of accommodation. Before he sets off again, he decides, out of pity for the lonely and confused Mara, to continue posing as her son. But when Mara's friend Warren thinks he recognizes Rocky when he visits him, Jonas feels increasingly uncomfortable in his skin. Finally, Mara's daughter Billie returns home, and Jonas is convinced that his cover will be exposed. Contrary to expectations, however, Billie also thinks he is her missing brother. The attractive blonde soon takes him over and they spend almost every free minute together. Everything seems to be fine even when Mara, Warren, and Billie throw a reunion party for him, the alleged relative.

When Jonas gets involved in an affair with his supposed sister, Mara is visibly worried about the intimate relationship between the two. Having become restless, Jonas wants to find out what could be behind the mysterious disappearance of the real Rocky. When Warren mentions Rocky's former girlfriend Linda, Jonas goes to Salina to speak to her. He finds her at the local restaurant. As it turns out, Linda is the first person who doesn't think he's Rocky. Back at Mara's house, Jonas searches Billie's things and finds old photos that confirm that he doesn't look anything like the real Rocky. When he confronts Billie with the truth, she confesses to him that she lied to protect her mother and because she loved Rocky and wanted him back, albeit as an illusion. To get more answers to his questions, Jonas visits Linda again. She tells him that she wanted to become engaged to him on the day Rocky's sudden disappearance.

Unexpectedly, Jonas' longtime friend Charlie arrives in the area and threatens to destroy Mara's fantasy world for good. But neither Billie and Mara are in the slightest irritated when Charlie calls his friend Jonas by his real name. They even spend a happy time together. Although Charlie offers to ride with him, Jonas decides to stay with Billie and Mara. But then Jonas learns the truth about Rocky's whereabouts: Billie once had a sexual relationship with her brother. When Rocky tried to leave her for Linda, however, Billie angrily grabbed a stone and fatally hit him in the head. Jonas finally confronts Billie and is beside himself. He grabs her and hits her against a wall, leaving Billie dead on the floor. Horrified by what he did, Jonas flees into the rain and sets about driving away in a car. Mara runs after him and begs him to stay with her. She even wants to help him bury Billie's body, exactly where Rocky found his last resting place four years ago. Jonas doesn't let her stop him, however. He drives to Salina, faces the sheriff and tells him everything that has happened.

background

The shooting took place on the Canary Island of Lanzarote . It turned out to be the last film by actor Ed Begley , who died in Hollywood in April 1970. The Road to Salina premiered in Italy on November 17, 1970 . The film was shown for the first time in German cinemas on December 2, 1971.

Cult director Quentin Tarantino liked the film's soundtrack so much that he used Clinic's song The Chase (made up of Philip Brigham, Phil Steele and Alan Reeves) for a similar scene in a desert in his film Kill Bill - Volume 2 . The song Sunny Road to Salina by the French singer Christophe , who was then still called Daniel Bevilacqua, can also be heard in the 2004 action film as a reference to Georges Lautner's film.

Reviews

“In an impressive landscape, the film creates its subject with criminal tension, without losing sight of the human conflict and its tragic consequences,” said the lexicon of international films . For TV Spielfilm , The Road to Salina was a "[s] olider crime thriller in fancy pictures".

Kevin Thomas of the Los Angeles Times found at the time that The Road to Salina was essentially a "fable" that illustrates "how tragedy can arise when reality invades the lonely lives of those living in a fantasy world." Rita Hayworth arouses "a lot of sympathy as a tormented woman who portrays her so well". Mimsy Farmer, on the other hand, makes "an invitation to certain misfortune irresistible" with her expressiveness. The film is "refined, even sensitive", and it is "thanks to Lautner and his impeccable direction". According to Newsday , the best thing about the movie is "Georges Lautner's direction, the neurotic, almost cannibalistic, dynamic intensity of the broad-shouldered, lustful Mimsy Farmer, and Rita Hayworth's introverted willingness to suffer". The result is "a very strange film" that is "more captivating" than it should be.

Awards

Mimsy Farmer received the David di Donatello for her performance in 1971 .

  3. “Essentially, Road to Salina is a fable showing how tragedy can occur when reality intrudes upon the lonely lives of those who live in a world of fantasy. Miss Hayworth evokes much sympathy for the anguished woman she portrays so well. Lean and intense as ever, Miss Farmer once again makes an invitation to certain disaster seem irresistible. 4. “The best thing about the film are Georges Lautner's direction and the neurotic, almost carnivorous, energetic intensity of the many-toothed, broad-shouldered, predatory Mimsy Farmer and the introverted passion of Rita Hayworth […].
