Dave Carey (musician, 1926)

David Aaron "Dave" Carey (born February 14, 1926 in Pittsburgh ; † April 8, 2019 ) was an American orchestral, jazz and studio musician ( percussion , also vibraphone , piano , arrangement , composition ).

Live and act

Carey's mother was a theater pianist, his father a stage worker. As a child prodigy and self-taught, he first began to play the drums; at the age of five he appeared in the Loews Penn Theater in Pittsburgh. After completing his military service in the US Navy during World War II, he studied piano from 1950 to 1952 at the Pittsburgh Musical Institute at the University of Pittsburgh . In 1954 he moved with his family to New York and continued his studies at the Manhattan School of Music ; He also had lessons from Eddie Sauter and Lennie Tristano , and later from Walter Rosenberger .

Carey also performed as a pianist in nightclubs such as the Hotel Pierre and the Maisonette Room of the St. Regis Hotel on East 55th Street. For several years Carey also appeared on television performing excellent pianos on The Price Is Right show hosted by another former Pittsburgh man, Bill Cullen. Carey moved from television to NBC recording studios in the 1960s and returned to percussion to become one of the busiest session players in New York City. He also worked on Broadway .

In the following 40 years he worked as a studio musician on recordings of well-known musicians and singers, such as Bill Evans & Claus Ogerman , Tony Bennett , Frank Sinatra , Roberta Flack ( Feel Like Makin 'Love ), Ralph MacDonald , Ray Charles , Ringo Starr , Van McCoy , Leon Pendarvis , JJ Johnson & Al Gray ( Things Are Getting Better All the Time ), Meco Menardo , Richard Tee , The Four Seasons , Laura Nyro ( Eli and the Thirteenth Confession , 1968), Mandy Patinkin and Ashford & Simpson .

Carey released several albums under his own name, which he also produced and arranged, such as Jazz for Bach Buffs , Bandwagon Plus Two and The Song and Dance Man . As a composer he was responsible for a number of works, including his Suite for Xylophone and Orchestra . In the field of jazz he was involved in 31 recording sessions between 1966 and 2003, including a. with Doc Severinsen ( Swinging and Singing , 1967), the Brass Choir & Warren Kime , Toots Thielemans , Harold Vick , Moondog , Herbie Hancock , David "Fathead" Newman , Randy Crawford , Marlena Shaw , Stanley Turrentine , Helen Merrill , Cleo Laine , Bob Dorough , Frank Sinatra Jr. and Dick Hyman .
