David Butler (Director)
David Butler (born December 17, 1894 in San Francisco , California , † June 14, 1979 in Arcadia , California) was an American film director , actor , screenwriter and film producer .
Life
David Butler was born in San Francisco to a theater director and an actress. He gained his first acting experience as an extra in theater performances. He later starred in two David Wark Griffith films : The Girl Who Stayed Home and The Greatest Thing in Life . He was soon able to establish himself as a well-known actor in the film business, while also continuing to appear in the theater. From 1923 he was the stage manager of the Morosco Theater in Los Angeles. In 1927 Butler starred in the Oscar-winning drama Das Glück in der Mansarde . That same year he made his directorial debut with the 20th-century Fox comedy High School Hero .
During Butler's nine years with Fox, he directed over thirty films, including four productions with child star Shirley Temple . Butler's last film for Fox was The Golden Whip , for which Walter Brennan won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor . Butler then worked with Bing Crosby on the films The Road to Morocco and If I Had My Way . He also made films with Doris Day , including Charming Woman , Marjorie Marjorie? , The Broadway Lullaby and Heavy Colts in delicate hands . In the 1950s and 1960s, Butler mainly created episodes of television series, including Growing Up and Wagon Train . Film studios valued Butler as a reliable director who consistently produced solid quality goods.
In 1967 he ended his long career with the music strip C'mon, Let's Live a Little . He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his cinematic work . In 1978, a year before his death, David Butler was honored with the Directors Guild of America Award.
