history

Originally settled by the Potawatomi Indians, the area was settled by Horace Lamb and Jacob B. Cadwell in 1835 and named Cadwell's Corner. A shopping center on Cadwell's Farm on Waukegan Road and Lake Cook Road still bears that name. The area grew due to the navigable rivers in the area, particularly the Des Plaines River and the Chicago River. Around 1840 the name of the city was changed to "Leclair". Within a decade, settler John Millen proposed another name change to Deerfield to honor his hometown of Deerfield , Massachusetts , and the large number of deer that live in the area.

In 1847 the first school was founded in Deerfield. The village was incorporated in 1903 when its population was around 400. In the early 20th century, the town experienced rapid population growth as part of the Chicago metropolitan area . Since the early 1980s, Deerfield has seen a large influx of Jews , Asians, and Greeks, giving the community a more diverse cultural and ethnic makeup. In 1985 President Ronald Reagan visited the town.

From 1987 office rental activity in Deerfield increased enormously and new office buildings were built.
