The historic Delphi

Delfi ( pronunciation : [ ðɛlˈfi ], Greek Δελφοί ( m. Pl. ), Alternative transcription Delphi or Delphoi, official name Dimos Delfon Δήμος Δελφών) is a Greek municipality (Dimos) in the administrative region of Central Greece . The municipality of Delfi was created in 1997 during the local government reform of Schedio Kapodistrias through the amalgamation of the previously independent municipalities of Delfi and Chrisso . The seat of the community was the small town of the same name. During the administrative reform in 2010 , a single municipality was formed from the eastern half of the Fokida prefecture , in which Delfi became a municipality. This new municipality with the city of Amfissa as its administrative center corresponds almost exactly to the area of ​​the province of Parnassida, which existed until 1997, but was named Delfi after its most famous attraction, the ancient Sanctuary of Delphi .

The small town of Delfi

The modern town of Delfi is about 1 km west of the excavations along the main road from Amfissa to Arachova . The city was founded in 1892 when the residents of the village of Kastri had to be relocated in the course of the excavation work, and today lives mainly from tourism , which is why more than 30 hotels and countless taverns are located here.

Honorary citizen

• In 1997, the environmentalist Franz Weber was made an honorary citizen.

• On 23 July 2007 the was President of the European Commission , José Manuel Barroso at the Temple of Apollo awarded an honorary citizen of the community in Delfi.
