Ghostface Killah (born May 9, 1970 ; real name Dennis Coles ) is an American rapper and member of the Wu-Tang clan .

biography

Ghostface was born under the name Dennis Coles in the Stapleton Projects of Staten Island / NY on May 9, 1970. As a relative of RZA , he has been a member of the Wu-Tang Clan since 1993. In 1998/99, Ghostface had to serve a four-month prison sentence for attempted robbery.

As a solo artist, he has released seven solo albums so far, of which Iron Man reached second place on the US Billboard charts. He is known both for his up-tempo and seemingly incomprehensible stream-of-consciousness raps and, in his later career, for his emotionally charged way of performing. His fifth record, Fishscale , was released on March 31, 2006 and featured features by newcomer Ne-Yo , Trife and the entire Wu-Tang clan. Fishscale achieved in the "Rolling Stone" "Top 50 Albums of the year 2006" as the best hip-hop album rank 5. The successor to Fishscale appeared a short time later and is called More Fish , although the album name already indicates that Most of it is unused material from Fishscale . The regular follow-up work The Big Doe Rehab sold only 36,000 copies in the first week in the USA, which caused Ghostface Killah to record a video for his (according to his own account) around 115,000 MySpace fans in which he asked them to buy his new album instead illegally downloaded from the Internet. As proof, fans should bring the CD they have bought to concerts, interviews, etc. A similar tactic was followed by 50 Cent, who announced in an interview that he would only give autographs on purchased CDs.

In addition to the releases of the entire Wu-Tang clan, Ghostface Killah had his first solo appearance on Raekwon's 1995 release Only Built 4 Cuban Linx . His own first album, Iron Man , was released in 1996. He made a lasting impression on the hip-hop scene and reached second place on the pop charts. The single Daytona 500 from the same album is considered a smaller classic of the music genre.

As usual in the scene, he entered into numerous collaborations. The entire Wu-Tang Clan, Missy Elliott and Jadakiss had guest appearances on his albums . He himself participated in records from the clan members as well as from Mobb Deep , Cappadonna , Busta Rhymes and De La Soul, among others . With the British R&B group The 411 he managed to land a hit in Australia and the United Kingdom. Although he did not achieve any further success in the US mainstream, like most Wu-Tang members he became a well-known figure in American hip-hop culture.

In early March, the rapper announced that he would publish a collection on March 25, 2008 on his own label, which would contain rare and non-album tracks.

Together with producer Adrian Younge, he developed the concept album Twelve Reasons to Die in 2013 . In this scary gangster story, he describes in a fictional story how he got his name. The whole thing continued in 2015 with another part.

In addition to the alias Ghostface Killah , he also uses Ghostface as well as Ironman , Tony Stark (the main human character of the comics Iron Man ), Pretty Toney , Tony Montana , Captain America , Pretty Starks , Wally Champ , Faceless , Ghost Deini or G-Deini .
