Dennis R. "Denny" Urban (born June 28, 1988 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ) is an American ice hockey player who was most recently under contract with the Straubing Tigers from the German Ice Hockey League .

Career

Youth and beginnings in college hockey

Denny Urban grew up with his two sisters in his native Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania . In neighboring Ohio , with the Mahoning Valley Phantoms , he completed his first league games in the NAHL . There he was able to convince with good performances and was selected by the Omaha Lancers in the USHL Entry Draft in ninth position. In the unfamiliar environment, around 1,500 kilometers from his parents' house, Urban could not meet his expectations and after only six months moved to the closer Columbus , to the Ohio Junior Blue Jackets . For the 2007/08 season, he began studying majoring in Accounting at Robert Morris University in his hometown of Pittsburgh, where he for the local hockey team, the Robert Morris Colonials in the CHA played until the team in 2010, the AHA changed. In his four years at university, he was on his division's all-star team three times and was named best defender in 2011. Furthermore, Urban set the record for the most-scored points by a defender at Robert Morris University.

Years in the ECHL and AHL

Only shortly after finishing his studies Urban signed a try-out contract with the Reading Royals from the ECHL until the end of the season . He was able to convince and was then used in the play-offs. One and a half more years followed with the team from eastern Pennsylvania until Urban accepted an offer from the higher-class Worcester Sharks from the AHL in December 2012 . His initial loan contract was converted into a permanent contract after two weeks until the end of the season. This was not extended, however, and Urban moved to league rivals San Antonio Rampage , who gave him a player swap in February 2013 to the Springfield Falcons , also from the AHL. At the end of the 2014/15 season , the defender was sent to the cooperation partner Kalamazoo Wings from the ECHL in order to strengthen them in the end of the season and the play-offs.

Change to Europe

For the 2015/16 season , Urban decided to switch to the Straubing Tigers in the DEL , his first professional station outside of North America. After one season, however, the Lower Bavarian team and Urbans parted ways.

Style of play

Denny Urban is considered an offensive defender who, due to his stature, sometimes shows weaknesses on the defensive. The right-handed shooter plays disciplined, which is why he rarely takes a seat in the penalty bench due to unnecessary time penalties . Jason Dunham , the sporting director of the Straubing Tigers said: "He is technically good, can play a quick first pass, can run the disc well and has experience in power play, where he has played almost his entire career."
