action

When Berta dies, the whole family comes together in their home town of Bootshaven, including her only living granddaughter Iris. She is supposed to inherit the family home, but she doesn't know if she wants to keep it. Too many painful memories are associated with this place. Max Ohmstedt, the brother of Iris' former childhood friend Mira, is also present at the will reading.

Iris initially stays for a week and remembers when her cousin Rosmarie was still alive and they played with Mira and worried poor Max. One evening old Herr Lexow came to visit and brought Iris something to eat. During the conversation, Mr. Lexow reveals to Iris that he believes he is the father of Inga, Berta's second oldest daughter.

At the age of 20, Mr. Lexow became the teacher of Berta and her sister Anna. When Mr Lexow was strolling past Berta and Anna's house one evening, he was surprised by Anna and they slept together. The next morning Anna has pneumonia, from which she dies shortly afterwards. Berta soon marries Hinnerk, for whom Berta is only the second choice, because he was in love with Anna. The marriage is not happy. Hinnerk works a lot and comes home late. Berta is at home alone with her daughter and takes care of the household. Mr. Lexow visits Berta and reveals his love to her. They kiss and make love. Hinnerk comes home in the evening. Berta sleeps with him to make sure that if you are pregnant, paternity cannot be questioned. After that Berta was out of reach of Mr. Lexow, so that it was never found out who the real father of Inga was.

Iris wants to visit Max's parents to find out about Mira. But they haven't lived in the house for a long time, so she meets Max again. They spend a nice evening together, but Iris does not allow the burgeoning feelings. They meet several times, spend time together and when they are bathing together in a lake, Iris kisses Max unexpectedly. This reciprocates her feelings. Iris asks Max about Mira and Rosmarie. When she learns that Mira lives nearby, she arranges a meeting with her, but Mira does not appear.

On the way back, Iris drives to the gas station in Bootshaven and remembers Peter Klaasen, who used to work in the gas station. Peter and Inga were in love with each other. Because Peter studied mathematics, he gave Rosmarie and Mira tutoring. Rosmarie had her eye on him too and tried to seduce him. When Inga surprised Rosmarie and Peter with a kiss in the garden, she threw him out of the house. Mira sexually coerces Peter, whereupon she becomes pregnant. Rosmarie orders Mira to abort the child and tells Iris about the pregnancy. There is an argument. At night, Rosmarie and Mira climb an apple tree that is very close to a greenhouse. Rosmarie climbs onto the greenhouse and falls - she dies.

At the end of the film, Iris meets with Max to tell him that she will accept her inheritance and keep the house. Max kisses Iris and is overjoyed. Mira still hasn't met Iris. Max received post from Mira for this. She got married and sent in photos from the wedding. In the picture you can see Mira with her wife and Mira looks just like Rosmarie.

Trivia

  • The place “Bootshaven” is an invention of the author.
  • The white currant bushes were not real. Brightly shimmering plastic beads were threaded into small berry clusters and attached to the green-leaved bushes in the film garden.
  • According to the script, the apples on the old tree behind the rustic country house, which were reddened overnight, had been clipped to the branches with magnets in hours of manual labor.

Reviews

The magazine epd Film rated the production as follows: “The upright staging, in which emotional climaxes are announced by penetrating piano clinking, rarely [spark] sparks. That doesn't mean the film failed. But it leaves the stupid feeling that there would have been more. "

German Film and Media Assessment (FBW) awards the award: Family saga, predicate valuable. Individual shots have an almost magical effect like a currant bush, the fruits of which turn white with sadness. A rousing and touching family story.
