action

The Swiss Federal President , known as the “Kater” in the Swiss Student Union (because he had a beloved cat that seemed to have seven lives during his childhood), receives the Spanish royal couple on an official state visit . The major media event is intended to make him popular again with the population after his polls have plummeted. But an intrigue paralyzes the state reception. Behind this is Dr. Stotzer, Kater's longtime friend and political companion. Years ago, their friendship was tarnished when the cat married Marie, who was already with Dr. Stotzer was engaged. Now he sees an opportunity to realize his own plans for the office of Federal President.

Stotzer hopes for a political scandal , is at stake in which both hangover career and his marriage. He takes advantage of the fact that the young son of the presidential couple is terminally ill in a clinic and the father still goes about his state business. At the evening state banquet, Marie, disappointed by her husband's behavior, appears late at first, later she has a fit of rage, accuses Hangover of human cruelty and leaves the banquet. Stotzer sees his plans work, especially since he has made sure that the queen visits the clinic the next day, which promises further tensions - with his sister Greti as a substitute companion for Marie, which should bring him further publicity.

Like his cat, the tomcat has several lifetimes in childhood and tells the Spanish royal couple about his son's illness, which draws them to his side. Kater appears at the hospital with the queen, Stotzer is duped. The press finds out that Kater's son is in the hospital and they rush into the hospital room on the boy and Marie, whereupon Kater throws them out. A wave of renewed sympathy that could save his political career is palpable for Kater, but Marie seems to turn away from him for good, as he seems to mistrust her son for his career. Kater then declares his resignation from all his offices and can thus save his marriage.

The film is based on the bestseller of the same name by Thomas Hürlimann .
