German war cemetery on the Georgenberg
The German war cemetery on the Georgenberg is part of an area monument in Spremberg in the Brandenburg district of Spree-Neisse .
Background and story
The southern Brandenburg area is affected by the devastation due to the mining of lignite . In addition to the demolition of villages, areas on which war dead from World War II are buried are also being destroyed. In some cases, however, bones are also discovered that come to light during the recovery of ammunition in preparation for the Welzow-Süd opencast mine in the search for duds . For this reason, a reburial cemetery was built on the Georgenberg in 1995, which included the 174 existing war cemeteries from World War I and World War II . The first reburial took place on October 24, 1995 and concerned a fallen German pilot who was recovered from his plane wreck near Wolkenberg . By June 2001 a total of 696 German war dead found their final resting place there.
