German Senior Championships (athletics)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

German senior championships are German championships in athletics . They were held for the first time in 1972 , then called the best fights .

The organizer is the German Athletics Association (DLV) in conjunction with a state and, if applicable, local organizer.

The athletes are rated according to their age group.

history

In 1972 the German senior best fights were held for the first time on a relatively small scale, with a manageable number of participants and competitions. As early as 1973, 1974 at the latest, there were signs that there was immense interest, and for the organizers of those years the staging of the two-day competitions was only possible because the best fights were offered in a "slimmed down" form. For example, in some classes only a middle distance was run, the pole vault and triple jump were missing as well as the hurdles, and for the older athletes there were short sprints over 50 meters and 75 meters.

Until 1975, the organizers had to organize the road runs and walking competitions held together with the railway competitions, which changed from 1976 onwards, as there have been separately held competitions on the street since that year. Due to the further increase in interest, it was decided in 1979 to extend the competitions to three days, but this did not mean relief for long.

In 1984 the best fights were divided into Seniors I (m / f 30 - 45) and Seniors II (m / f 50 and older), because more and more new competitions and the addition of further age groups led to such a large number of athletes, that a division was inevitable.

In 1988 the longstanding discussion about the name of the competitions, which from then on were officially called the German Senior Championship I and the German Senior Championship II, came to an end. The total number of participants in both title fights was around 2000.

From 2012, German senior champions will again be determined on the occasion of an event, because the declining number of participants and the resulting difficulty in finding organizers made this step necessary.
