Diane Modahl ( Diane Dolores Modahl, née Edwards ) (born June 17, 1966 in Manchester ) is a former British middle -distance runner who specialized in the 800-meter distance .

career

In 1986 she won silver for England starting at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh . At the European Athletics Championships in 1986 in Stuttgart and the World Athletics Championships in 1987 in Rome, she reached the semi-finals. In 1988 she was eighth at the Olympic Games in Seoul .

In 1990 she won the Commonwealth Games in Auckland . At the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow she was seventh over 1500 m and at the European Athletics Championships in Split eighth over 800 m.

After a semi-final at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, she was fourth at the 1993 World Cup in Stuttgart. In 1994 she was eliminated from the semi-finals at the European Championships in Helsinki .

At the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, she was suspended after a doping test gave a positive result. Modahl protested her innocence and appealed against the four-year ban imposed on her for doping . A year later, the British Athletics Federation (BAF) reversed this decision after the athlete was able to prove that the sample had become unusable due to lack of cooling. In March 1996, the IAAF also lifted the ban. In 2000 she failed with a claim for damages against the BAF before the High Court of Justice . The British Athletics Federation broke up in 1999 for financial reasons as it was unable to bear the high legal costs. The legal successor UK Athletics (UKA) did not have to pay the debts of the predecessor in terms of bankruptcy law. Modahl was right, but would be left with the high legal and court costs, while the association could simply re-establish itself. She had lost her house, her fortune.

At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, she was injured in the preliminary run. In 1998 she reached the semi-finals at the European Championships in Budapest and won bronze at the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur . At the 1999 World Cup in Seville and the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, she failed in the first round.

She was English champion over 800 m six times (1986, 1987, 1989, 1992, 1994, 1998) and once each British champion over 400 m (1990) and 800 m (1987).
