action
The young Hopper Nash, like his friend Nicky, was called up for war in 1942. The two only have six weeks before they have to start their duties. So they work together in a bowling alley and get through their last days in peace. In the cinema, at the cash register, Hopper meets the beautiful Caddy Winger. He is immediately enthusiastic about her and decides to "conquer" her. He gives his little brother the job of giving her flowers.
When Caddy visits the fast food restaurant where Hopper and Nicky hang out, Hopper jumps over the counter and pretends to be working. He follows Caddy to her house and discovers that she lives in a mansion . He assumes that she is a flapper and therefore must be rich. As it turns out, Caddy only lives there because her mother is a maid . Hopper later sees Caddy working in the library. He tries to find out her name from her, but she rejects him. Hopper meets Caddy again, who wants to go to an ice rink with friends. He pretends he knows how to ice skate. In the end he falls, but can spend a short time with Caddy. He asks her out on a date that she agrees to go on. They meet up and soon become a couple.
Meanwhile, Nicky's friend Sally is pregnant with his child. He's trying to get Hopper $ 150 for an abortion. Hopper asks Caddy who he thinks can easily afford it.
To help Hopper, Caddy tries to steal a pearl necklace from the mansion. The pearl necklace belongs to Alice, a young woman who also lives in the manor house. Caddy is caught trying and admits why she needs the chain. She finally gets the money she needs from Alice.
Sally has the abortion and Hopper is mad at Nicky for not being there for his girlfriend. They quarrel, but make up again and realize that the two can always rely on each other.
The film ends when the young men prepare to get on the train to go to war. They wait for the train to leave before running after them and jumping up.
