from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dieter Mathoi (born September 26, 1943 ; † August 18, 2012 ) was an Austrian architect. He worked for decades with two colleagues in the architectural office of Heinz & Mathoi & Streli in Innsbruck , where he founded his own office in 2008.

Life

Mathoi studied architecture from 1963 to 1967 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . After a few years of practice, he became an assistant at the Institute for Structural Engineering at the University of Innsbruck in 1972 , where he worked until 1976.

In 1973 Mathoi teamed up with two colleagues, Karl Heinz and Jörg Streli . They founded the architecture office Heinz & Mathoi & Streli in Innsbruck. The state vocational school they built for Vorarlberg in Feldkirch received the Austrian Builder Award in 1981 . While they carried out many projects together, everyone also pursued individual tasks. Mathoi built, among other things, single-family houses, for example for Günther Mader , MPreis- Markt and the Vowa car dealership in Innsbruck. For example, the three architects together built a group residence in Jagdberg, Schlins , Vorarlberg , which was completed in 1984. Another joint project was the addition of two floors to the women's and head clinic in Innsbruck. The project was built from 2006 to 2008 and was nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award 2009. In 2008 Springer published an overview of her works, both collective and individual, Heinz-Mathoi-Streli / Architects / Buildings and Projects / Buildings and Projects , with contributions from the architecture critics Friedrich Achleitner and Otto Kapfinger . In the same year, the architects closed their joint office and Mathoi opened his own office in Innsbruck.

Kaufhaus Tyrol in the center of Innsbruck

An important and controversial project was Kaufhaus Tyrol in downtown Innsbruck, which Mathoi planned in collaboration with David Chipperfield . The British star architect was commissioned by the investor Rene Benko with the overall design of the new department store after the previous plans of the Innsbruck architect Johann Obermoser came under heavy criticism, especially because of his design proposal for the facade on Maria-Theresien-Straße, and Benko finally agreed with the contract Obermoser had dissolved by mutual agreement. The planning of Chipperfield (and Mathoi) also remained controversial at the beginning, but the Kaufhaus Tyrol, which opened in 2010, was awarded the renowned Mies van der Rohe Award for architecture in 2019 .

A specialty of Mathoi became the building of prisons , whereby he advocated a humane treatment of prisoners. The Korneuburg Justice Center in Lower Austria, built together with the DIN A4 architects' office, was one of five buildings to be awarded the State Prize for Architecture and Sustainability in 2014.

Buildings by Mathoi were shown in the international exhibition Autochtone Architektur in Tirol , including in Munich.

Dieter Mathoi died on August 18, 2012 at the age of 68.

The three projects just mentioned were hateful objects of people and the media during the planning, construction and completion. Today they are beloved sights that nobody wants to miss anymore. "
