Jörg Streli

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jörg Streli (born March 26, 1940 in Innsbruck ; † February 13, 2019 there ) was an Austrian architect and university professor . He worked for decades with two colleagues in the architectural office of Heinz & Mathoi & Streli.

Life

Streli was born in Innsbruck . He studied architecture at the Technical University of Vienna from 1958 to 1964. After several years of practical experience, he became an assistant at the Institute for Structural Engineering at the University of Innsbruck in 1969 , where he was until 1976. From 1992 to 1997 he had a teaching position at the university.

From 1973 Streli teamed up with two colleagues, Karl Heinz and Dieter Mathoi . They founded the architecture office Heinz & Mathoi & Streli. The state vocational school they built for Vorarlberg in Feldkirch received the Austrian Builder Award in 1981 . While they carried out many projects together, everyone also pursued individual tasks. Streli preferred to build single-family houses, taking into account the client's wishes and the conditions of the building site. Inspired by role models such as Clemens Holzmeister , Josef Lackner , Lois Welzenbacher and Frank Lloyd Wright , Streli found a personal style that was shaped by his love for nature and traditional rural building forms. Wood became a preferred material. Streli was also increasingly effective in urban environments. For example, the three architects together built a group residence in Jagdberg, Schlins , Vorarlberg , which was completed in 1984.

Extension of the University Hospital Innsbruck, completed in 2008

Another joint project was the expansion of the women's and head clinic in Innsbruck, in which they expanded an existing building by two floors. The project was built from 2006 to 2008 and was nominated for the Fundació Mies van der Rohe 2009 prize. In 2008 Springer published an overview of her works, both collective and individual, Heinz-Mathoi-Streli / Architects / Buildings and Projects / Buildings and Projects , with contributions from the architecture critics Friedrich Achleitner and Otto Kapfinger . In the same year, the architects closed their joint office. Streli built a house for drug addicts in Innsbruck, called the Mentlvilla, opposite Welzenbacher's Adambräu, which now houses the Architekturzentrum Tirol. The house for addicts is run by Caritas and offers accommodation and medical care. It was nominated for the 2016 Tirol Architecture Prize.

From 1983 to 1994 Streli was also chairman of the architecture department at the Chamber of Engineers and Architects for Tyrol and Vorarlberg. From 1993 to 1995 he was a member of the Advisory Board for Urban Design in Linz .

Buildings by Streli were shown in the international exhibition Autochthonous Architecture in Tyrol , including in Munich. He was a member of the jury for tenders, for example for a new university place in Bressanone in 2014.

Jörg Streli died in Innsbruck on February 13, 2019.
