The Roman Catholic Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle ( lat. Dioecesis Hagulstadensis et Novacastrensis , Engl. Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle ) is in United Kingdom situated Roman Catholic diocese , based in Newcastle upon Tyne .

history

The diocese of Hexham and Newcastle was on January 30, 1688 by Pope Innocent XI. Established from cession of territory by the Apostolic Vicariate England as the Apostolic Vicariate Northern District . The Vicariate Apostolic Northern District gave parts of its territory in 1840 to establish the Vicariate Apostolic Lancashire District and Yorkshire District .

On September 29, 1850, the Vicariate Apostolic Northern District by Pope Pius IX. with the Apostolic Constitution Universalis Ecclesiae - restoration of the Catholic hierarchy in England - raised to the diocese and renamed the Diocese of Hexham . It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Westminster as a suffragan . The Diocese of Hexham was renamed the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle on May 23, 1861 .
