The Huallanca District is located in the Huaylas Province in the Ancash region of western Peru . The district was established on April 14, 1950. It has an area of 195 km². The 2017 census counted 1,062 residents. In 1993 the population was 1691, in 2007 it was 955. The district administration is located in the 1377 m high village of Huallanca with 551 inhabitants (as of 2017). Huallanca is located 26 km north of the provincial capital Caraz .
Geographical location
The district of Huallanca is located on the left bank of the river Río Santa, which flows north and later north-northwest, in the northwest of the Huaylas province. The area is in the north of the Cordillera Negra . In the extreme southeast, the Cañón del Pato gorge runs along the district boundary. Below this is the substation of the Cañón del Pato hydropower station , about one kilometer east of the main town of Huallanca .
The district of Huallanca borders in the southwest with the districts Huaylas and Santo Toribio , in the west with the district Macate ( province Santa ), in the northeast with the district La Pampa ( province Corongo ), in the east with the district Yuracmarca and in the southeast with the district Santa Cruz .
