The Moche district is one of 11 districts in the Trujillo Province in the La Libertad region of western Peru . The Moche District was founded on January 2, 1853. The 25.25 km² district had 37,436 inhabitants at the 2017 census. In 1993 the population was 22,020, in 2007 29,727. The administrative seat is the city of Moche . The national road 1N ( Panamericana ) crosses the district. In the north of the district are the archaeological sites of Huaca del Sol ("Sun Temple") and Huaca de la Luna ("Moon Temple").
The Moche district is located southeast of the city of Trujillo . The Río Moche River flows to the sea along the northwestern district boundary. South of the river mouth, the district on the Pacific coast has an approximately 5.3 km long section. It extends up to 7 km inland. The district borders in the northwest on the districts Víctor Larco Herrera and Trujillo , in the northeast on the district Laredo and in the southeast on the district Salaverry .
