The district of Santa María is located in the province of Huaura in the north of the Lima region in the central west of Peru . The district was established on December 5, 1918. It has an area of ​​127.51 km². At the 2017 census there were 36,267 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 19,222, in 2007 27,699. The administrative seat is the city ​​of Cruz Blanca in the far west at an altitude of 75  m with 34,277 inhabitants (as of 2017). The city belongs to the agglomeration of the city of Huacho , of whose city center Cruz Blanca is 2 km northeast.

Geographical location

The Santa María district is located on the south bank of the Río Huaura, not far from where it flows into the sea. In the west it reaches up to 2 km to the Pacific coast , in the east about 26 km inland. The district consists mostly of desert. Irrigated agriculture is only practiced along the banks of the Río Huaura. The urban area is located in the far west of the district; apart from a few settlements, the district is otherwise uninhabited.

The Santa María district borders the Hualmay district in the northwest . In the north, on the opposite bank of the Río Huaura, is the district of Huaura . In the east and southeast, the district of Santa María is bordered by the district of Sayán and in the south and southwest by the district of Huacho .
