The Santa Leonor district is located in the Huaura province in the Lima region of western Peru . The district was established on June 3, 1940. It has an area of ​​375 km². The 2017 census counted 822 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1642, in 2007 it was 1521. The district administration is located in the 3580  m high village of Jucul with 160 inhabitants (as of 2017). Jucul is 95 km east-northeast of the provincial capital Huacho .

Geographical location

The Santa Leonor district is located in the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the far east of the Huaura province. In the northwest the Río Huaura , in the northeast its left tributary Río Checras forms the district boundary. The eastern district boundary runs along the continental divide .

The district of Santa Leonor is bordered to the west by the districts of Leoncio Prado and Checras , to the north by the districts of Pachangara and Oyón (both in the province of Oyón ), to the east by the district of Huayllay ( province of Pasco ) and to the south by the districts of Pacaraos and Veintisiete de Noviembre (both in the Huaral province ).
