Don Payne (musician)

Donald R. "Don" Payne (born January 7, 1933 in Wellington , Texas , † February 25, 2017 in Plantation , Florida ) was an American jazz and studio musician ( double bass ).

Live and act

Payne, who grew up in California, first learned to trumpet when he was ten , before switching to the double bass when he was 16. From the mid-1950s he played in Los Angeles a. a. with Harry Babasin , Joe Maini , Ornette Coleman ( Something Else !!! ), Art Pepper and Paul Horn . After moving to New York City, he worked primarily as a studio musician; He also worked in the local jazz scene with Mundell Lowe , Chris Connor , Herbie Mann , Stan Getz , Bobby Scott , Gary McFarland , Maynard Ferguson , Jackie Cain , Bobby Hackett , Freddie McCoy , Tony Bennett , John Tropea and Joe Beck ( Nature Boy , 1969). In the 1970s he worked on productions by Loudon Wainwright III , Judy Collins , Roy Buchanan , Leonard Cohen ( New Skin for the Old Ceremony , 1974), Janis Ian , Luiz Henrique , Harry Chapin and Melanie Safka . After his return to California he presented the album Rhapsodic Echoes (2000), on which u. a. Dave Hubbard and Don Friedman can be heard. In the field of jazz he was involved in 35 recording sessions between 1957 and 2000. He also worked as a composer, u. a. for the television series The Simpsons . Payne last lived in Florida, where he died in February 2017 at the age of 84.
