Doris Singleton

Doris Singleton (born September 28, 1919 in New York City , New York state , † June 26, 2012 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American singer and actress .

Life

Doris Singleton was born as Dorthea Singleton in Brooklyn , New York . She began her artistic career as a dancer at the American Ballet Theater . In the late 1930s she made her first appearances as a singer with Art Jarrett and his orchestra. Because of her good voice, she was hired as a singer for the radio . During the Second World War she was to be heard on several radio shows, including The Whistler . Her partners in various shows have included Alan Young , George Burns & Gracie Allen , Bob Hope , Jack Benny and Ed Gardner . During her guest appearance on the radio show My Favorite Husband , she met the actress, singer and entertainer Lucille Ball in 1948 ; this resulted in a lifelong friendship.

As an actress, Singleton worked primarily for television . She has had several non-stop and recurring series roles, episode roles, and guest roles on numerous US television series .

She made her television debut in 1953 in an episode of the American television series Adventures of Superman . In the same year she was engaged by Lucille Ball for the sitcom I Love Lucy , with Ball as the star. Singleton took on the role of myopic, conceited neighbor Caroline Appleby. She played from 1953 to 1957 in a total of 10 episodes of the series. In later years she took on several guest roles in other television series with Lucille Ball. Singleton was seen in two episodes of the series The Lucy Show (1966/1967); in the episode Lucy and Art Linklatter she played the actress Ruth Cosgrove, who is hired by Linklatter for a number on his television show. She also made several guest appearances in Ball's third sitcom Here's Lucy . She last appeared in Here's Lucy in 1974 as Ball's studio secretary in the episode Lucy Carter Meets Lucille Ball .

She had another continuous series role in 1960/1961 as a likeable neighbor Susie in the short-lived US television series Angel . In the television series My Three Sons , she played two different recurring series roles. In the 1964/1965 season she played Helen Morrison, the mother of the series character Sally Morrison. In the 1970/71 season she was Margaret Williams, the mother of the series character Polly Williams.

She also had numerous episode roles and guest roles in various American television series , including The Bob Cummings Show (1955), The Bob Hope Show (1955), Richard Diamond, Private Detective (1957), Perry Mason (1957/1958), Mike Hammer (1958), Dr. Bill Baxter, Doctor in Arizona (1958; as Laura Jones, girlfriend of Butch Cassidy in The Outlaw Legion ), The Smoking Colts (1962), Twilight Zone (1963), The Munsters (1965), On the Run (1965), FBI (1966), Dear Uncle Bill (1968), Dr. med. Marcus Welby (1971), Cannon (1975), Zeit der Sehnsucht (1976), Quincy (1978) and The Denver Clan (1982; as Mrs. Fredericks).

Singleton also starred in several movies in the 1950s , such as Terror at Midnight (1956), Affair in Reno (1957) and The Voice in the Mirror (1958).

Private

Singleton was widowed and childless at the time of her death. She was married to the writer, screenwriter, director and producer Charles Isaacs († 2002). Singleton and Isaacs had married in 1941 and had been married for a total of 61 years. She last lived in the Greater Los Angeles Area . She died at her Los Angeles home at the age of 92.
