Vatra Dornei ( Hungarian Dornavátra , German  Dorna Watra ) is a city in the Suceava district in northeast Romania .

Geographical location

Vatra Dornei is located at the mouth of the Dorna in the Bistrița , here also called "Golden Bistritz", in the northern part of the Eastern Carpathians . On the railway line Prundu Bârgăului-Vatra Dornei and the European route 58 , the small town is about 120 kilometers southwest of the district capital Suceava .

history

The place Vatra Dornei was first mentioned at the end of the 16th century and at that time belonged to the Principality of Moldova . From 1775 to 1918 the city belonged to the Habsburg Empire as part of the Bukovina and received city rights in 1907.

Vatra Dornei is a health resort and winter sports resort that was already known as a spa in the 19th century, but which today can no longer match its former glory. The casino from that time is now in ruins. The spa park still exists. There are three ski lifts. In the vicinity of the place, which is almost completely surrounded by mountains, hikers will find a number of attractive hiking routes.
