Dorothea van der Koelen

Dorothea van der Koelen (born April 6, 1960 in Darmstadt ) is a German gallery owner , art historian , curator and publisher .

Life

Dorothea van der Koelen is the daughter of an architect and the artist Lore Bert . She grew up in Mainz , where she in 1979 on humanistic Rabanus Maurus Grammar School , the High School took off and opened his own contemporary art gallery afterwards. In 1989 she opened her second gallery in Mainz. At the same time, she studied art history , philosophy , book studies , logic and Romance studies at Johannes Gutenberg University from 1980 . In 1993 she received her dissertation “Das Werk Heinz Gappmayr. Representation and Analysis ”. In 2001 she opened a branch of her Mainz gallery with La Galleria in Venice .

As a gallery owner and curator, she designed and supervised nearly 600 exhibitions worldwide (in Europe, Canada, USA, Australia, the United Arab Emirates, China, Japan, Nepal, Korea, Egypt) such as the exhibition “Water - Sand - Wide” in Sharjah Art Museum in the United Arab Emirates (2002) or, in collaboration with her mother Lore Bert, the exhibition “Art & Knowledge” as the official accompanying event of the 55th Venice International Art Biennale (2013). In addition, she has been realizing numerous art-in-building projects in collaboration with artists, architects and entrepreneurs for decades .

In 1995 she founded the Chorus Verlag together with her brother Martin van der Koelen . In 2002 she founded the Van der Koelen Foundation for Art and Science , which, with its lecture series, exhibitions and the awarding of scholarships , is dedicated to the promotion of young talent and the dialogue between cultures. In 2009, Dr. van der Koelen Consulting , which advises museums and companies on exhibition projects , building up art collections , collection concepts and marketing . In 2014 she opened the CADORO Center for Art and Science in Mainz-Hechtsheim.

As a juror and evaluator, van der Koelen participates in numerous committees for grants, competitions and art prizes. She is a member of the Federal Association of German Galleries and Art Dealers and the Advisory Board of Art Karlsruhe (2006) and has published numerous articles on contemporary art in the context of museum lectures as well as magazines and books.

In 2015, van der Koelen was awarded the Max Slevogt Medal of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate for her lifelong work for art . In 2017 she was also appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Rhineland-Palatinate Cultural Foundation. In 2019 she was honored with the Gutenberg statuette of the city of Mainz for her commitment and appointed to the art advisory board of the city of Mainz.
