Career
As a player
Irwin's career began in 1979 in the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League with the Royal York Royals . After a few years in the ice hockey team of Acadia University and Ohio University , the EC Peiting brought him to Germany for the 1988/89 season , where he was one of the league's top defenders in his debut season . After another three years with Upper Bavaria, Irwin came to ERC Sonthofen in 1992 . A season later, the upper house teams became aware of the performance of the defensive player, who was only 1.72 meters tall, and so he moved to the EHC 80 Nuremberg in the 2nd Bundesliga in the 1993/94 season , which was a year later in the German ice hockey League should play.
After a one-season guest appearance at the Ratinger Löwen , Irwin returned to ERC Sonthofen in the former 1st League South for the 1996/97 season , where he ended his playing career after one season.
As a trainer
After finishing his playing career, Irwin returned to Canada and initially coached the Calgary Royals from the Alberta Junior Hockey League . He then coached the University of Lethbridge's ice hockey team from 1998 to 2002 , with whom he became SAIT Eye Opener Champions in the 1999/00 and 2001/02 seasons .
His first coaching station in Germany was in the 2002/03 season of ESV Bayreuth in the major league . After two years in Bayreuth, HC Gherdëina signed him from the Italian A2 series. In 2006 he switched to league rivals HC Eppan Pirates and led the team to fourth place in the final ranking.
In the 2008/09 season , Irwin trained the Eispiraten Crimmitschau from the 2nd Bundesliga from September to November .
In May 2010 Irwin was introduced as the new trainer and junior coordinator at EHC Klostersee .
Four years later he left this station and signed a contract with EV Regensburg in April 2014 .
From April 2017 Doug Irwin was under contract with EV Duisburg in the Oberliga , where he formed a coaching team with Reemt Pyka . On November 22, 2017, Irwin was dismissed due to the inadequate sporting success from the point of view of the club management.
