The Catholic parish church of the Holy Trinity in Monreal , a local parish in the Mayen-Koblenz district in Rhineland-Palatinate , is built in the Gothic style and has numerous original furnishings. The church is located on the banks of the Elz , below the Great Castle, also known as Löwenburg .

history

The Trinity Church of Monreal was built in 1460 as the church of a collegiate monastery.

Exterior construction

The church is made of quarry stone . The bell tower with its pointed, polygonal pyramid roof rises on the west facade . The outer walls are divided into high buttresses .

A vestibule under the tower leads into the single-nave nave , which extends over three bays and opens into a drawn-in choir closed on five sides . Like the vestibule, it has a ribbed vault . The vault ribs rest on bundled wall services that are decorated with leaf capitals . Sometimes they end on consoles with expressive faces. The choir has a reticulated vault , on whose keystones the coats of arms of the Lords of Virneburg are depicted.

On the right side of the nave, a pointed arch opens to the baptistery, whose ribbed vault is supported by narrow columns . The capitals are decorated with foliage, coats of arms and a head.

Furnishing

On the north wall of the choir with the is canopies , pinnacles and crab occupied Maßwerkbögen decorated Gothic tabernacle of 1460/1464 received. The sculptures of the twelve apostles on the celebration altar come from the apostle altar donated in 1482.

The neo-Gothic high altar of the church was created in 1876 by the sculptor F. Ernst from Koblenz . In the upper scene a crucifixion group is shown, in the two lower scenes Jesus on the Mount of Olives and the resurrection of Christ . The figures on the side represent St. Agnes and St. Aloisius .

The baptismal font in the baptistery dates from 1815.

Figures of saints from the late Gothic and Baroque periods have been preserved in the church. On the west side of the nave, Saint Sebastian pierced with arrows is depicted, next to it is a Pietà . On the side walls are sculptures of St. Severus , identified by a shuttle , and St. New Year's Eve , the patron saint of domestic animals and farmers, with a cow crouching next to him. On the left in front of the choir are St. Lawrence , who is holding a grate in his hand, and St. Magdalena with a cross and a skull under her arm, the attributes of her penance.

The glass paintings are also neo-Gothic. On the right chancel window the finding of the cross by St. Helena and the Exaltation of the Cross by Emperor Herakleios . The windows of the baptistery depict scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary .
