Trinity Church (Tangermünde)

The Trinity Church is the Catholic church in Tangermünde , a town in the Stendal district in Saxony-Anhalt . The church, named after the Trinity , is the seat of the parish of St. Elisabeth in the Stendal deanery of the Magdeburg diocese . It is located on Arneburger Straße and is designated as an architectural monument by the State Office for Monument Preservation and Archeology of Saxony-Anhalt .

history

In 1538 the Reformation entered Tangermünde, introduced by Elector Joachim II and the court and district judge Hieronymus Staude. As a result, the St. Stephen's Church was evangelical-Lutheran and the Dominican monastery dissolved.

St. Elisabeth Chapel (2016)

1888 or 1891 acquired the Tangermünder Catholics previously including as a salt warehouse and as Montierungskammer the garrison used Tangermuende St. Elisabeth's Chapel at the customs gate and looked for some repair work in their 1891-1926 Catholic services. This church was rededicated on October 25, 1891. In 1910 a parish vicarie was set up in Tangermünde , and on June 14, 1919 it was elevated to a parish.

On April 21, 1924, Caspar Klein , Bishop of the Diocese of Paderborn , to which Tangermünde belonged at the time, laid the foundation stone for the Holy Trinity Church. On May 9, followed in 1926 by the Paderborn Cathedral Provost John Linneborn their blessing . The consecration took place on September 1, 1929 .

In 1953/54 the parish hall was built, in 1958 the church got three bells . In 1979 the high altar and the pulpit were removed, and a new altar was consecrated in 1986 . In 1991 the roof was renewed, in 1992 the heating. On July 8, 1994, the diocese of Magdeburg was established, to which the church has belonged ever since.

On July 1, 2006, the Tangermünde parish and the Klietz and Steckelsdorf curatorships were merged to form the Tangermünde – Klietz – Steckelsdorf community association, which, in addition to the Trinity Church, also includes the Maria Rosenkranzkönigin churches in Klietz , the castle chapel in Sandau , the now profaned church in Schönhausen and the St. Joseph's Church in Steckelsdorf . In 2010 the church in Klietz was also closed. On November 28, 2010, today's parish of St. Elisabeth emerged from the community .

The 2011 census in the European Union showed that of the 10,648 inhabitants of the municipality of "Stadt Tangermünde" 280, and thus around 2.6%, belonged to the Roman Catholic Church. The majority of the inhabitants did not belong to any religious community.

The east-facing brick church with its striking tower was built in the neo-Romanesque style and offers 223 seats. In the anteroom of the church there is a statue of Jesus Christ as the Good Shepherd . To the left and right of the choir there is a crescent moon Madonna , in front of which sacrificial candles can be placed, and a statue of St. Joseph of Nazareth . The baptismal font and a confessional are on the south wall . The interior of the church also includes 14 pictures of the Stations of the Cross and an organ .
