The mixed picture Wasserdost ( Eupatorium perfoliatum , Syn. : Eupatorium virginicum , Eupatorium glandulosum , Eupatorium connatum ), even by adult water hemp , American Wasserdost , Wasserdostenkraut , bone healing , Feverfew , intermittent fever herb , Indian herb called, is a plant from the family of the daisy family (Asteraceae).

Plant description

The Indian herb is a weakly fragrant, perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 100 to 150 centimeters. The shaggy-haired, stem -round stem is often red at the base and branched in the upper part. The lanceolate, acuminate leaves are rough on the upper side and spotted with flames on the underside and are characterized by a pronounced central nerve. The opposite leaves are 10 to 15 centimeters long. The lower pairs are fused at the base and give the impression that the stem seems to grow through the leaves.

The small, cup-shaped partial inflorescences appear in dense, flattened, golden inflorescences in July to September . Twelve to 15 white tubular flowers stand together in the flower heads . Small achenes are formed, with a bristly pappus , which are then spread with the wind.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 20.

Occurrence

The water dost is a widespread plant species in low-lying areas, which prefers moist soils on stream or lake banks, in forest clearings, on forest paths, in alluvial forests, in thickets and in swamp areas. This plant species, which is native to central North America , is mainly widespread from Canada to Florida and west to Texas and Nebraska , but is now also cultivated in Europe .

Important ingredients and effects

Eupatorin (it is a cytotoxic flavone ), essential oil , resin , tannins , wax , inulin , and the immune stimulators polysaccharides and sesquiterpene lactones . The immune- stimulating effect is attributed to the increase in the phagocytic performance of granulocytes . In addition, the sesquiterpenes are known for their anti-inflammatory (anti-inflammatory) effects.

Cultural history

The North American Indians, like the settlers later, used the leaves and the flowering twig tips of the bone healing agent as a sweat-inducing remedy for feverish conditions or a cold . The plant used to be one of the most widely used medicinal plants in America .

Linguistic

The Latin name Eupatorium probably goes back to the king of Ponthus Mithridates Eupator . The German name throughwax comes from the Latin (per = through and foliatus = leafy). The plant name Wasserdost indicates the preferred moist location of the plant. The name water hemp is based on the leaves of the bone that look like hemp . The terms bone healing, fever herb, intercooler herb come from the great value of the drug in the treatment of febrile conditions such as malaria , dengue fever (also called " break bone fever " in America, which literally means bone breaker fever , which refers to the pain caused by the lymph node swelling and irritation of the periosteum of the long bones) a type of flu that was common in the USA.
