The E-Ship 1 is a cargo ship that, in addition to a diesel drive, also has a drive using Flettner rotors , i.e. it is a rotor ship . It was commissioned in 2006 by the company Enercon from Aurich at the Lindenau shipyard in Kiel and completed in 2010 at the Cassens shipyard in Emden . It is designed for the transport of Enercon wind turbines . According to the operator, the fuel savings through the Flettner rotors and other optimizations are up to 25 percent.
history
The hull was built as Lindenau 285 by the Lindenau shipyard in Kiel. The launch took place on August 2, 2008. Originally the ship was supposed to be delivered in the first half of 2009. Due to the insolvency of the Lindenau shipyard, it could not be completed there, but was transferred to the Cassens shipyard in Emden in November 2008 . The steel construction work there was completed in January 2010 and the ship was towed into the dock of the North Sea Works , where final work on the underwater hull was carried out. In April 2010 the ship came back to the Cassens shipyard, where the further equipment was carried out.
Since June 1, 2010 the ship has been officially called E-Ship 1 . The first test drive on the North Sea took place on July 6, 2010. The test drives were accompanied by Germanischer Lloyd as a classification society in the southern North Sea. In summer 2010 the E-Ship 1 was put into service. The maiden voyage was to Ireland. In October 2010, the savings in fuel consumption should be determined on a trip in the Mediterranean .
After problems with the seven Mitsubishi diesel generators, the ship was in Emden on January 18, 2013 . The replacement of the diesel generators could not be carried out until November 2013 because the replacement generators first had to be built. In February 2014, after all the generators had been replaced, the newly deployed Auerbach shipping company resumed freight traffic.
construction
The new building, the bridge on the back stands is as steerage with three decks and two on port designed stationary cranes of 90 t payload, with a long boom and a rear ramp, so a LoRo ship .
With a length of 130.42 m and a width of 22.50 m, the ship has a shallow draft of max. 9.30 m and a measurement of 12,968 GT with a load capacity of 10,020 dwt. It is equipped with powerful maneuvering aids at the bow and stern and has ice class GL E3.
Drive and machinery
In the basic design of the ship, a number of advanced technical solutions were implemented, of which the propulsion concept is the most striking. Until 2013, the freighter was powered by a diesel-electric main drive with seven Mitsubishi marine diesel engines, the exhaust gases of which were passed through an exhaust gas boiler with a downstream steam turbine from Siemens STE. There were also four Flettner rotors developed by Enercon with a height of 27 m and a diameter of 4 m. The aim was to achieve a fuel saving of 30 to 40% at a speed of 16 knots . Due to technical problems, the Mitsubishi diesel generators had to be replaced in 2013 by Caterpillar generators with a total output of 6.3 MW.
The rear stern tube socket as a repository for the ship's propeller drive was designed in cooperation with Stahlguss Gröditz and cast in Gröditz on December 19, 2007. For the first time, an absorption system will be installed on a cargo ship to supply cold for the air conditioning system .
The use of new materials and a hull optimized in cooperation with the Hamburg Shipbuilding Research Institute are intended to generate further savings.
Cargo in space and on deck
Enercon is hoping for further savings, because previously chartered cargo space for these special products for the transport of wind turbines has resulted in disproportionate additional expenses for lashing and unusable space. The tailor-made new building, on the other hand, will use special transport racks known as cassettes to make loading and stowing the system components cheaper on the one hand, but on the other hand will be able to take over freight from third parties without any problems to optimize costs for the return journey.
