life and work

Edite Grinberga was born in Riga , Latvia in 1965 . She attended Jānis Rozentāls Art High School ( Jaņa Rozentāla Rīgas Mākslas vidusskola ) from 1975 to 1982 and then studied painting and textile design at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Riga from 1983 to 1988 . First she worked in Riga in the field of installation , object art and theater costume . After the borders were opened, he moved to Berlin in 1990 , and from then on Edite Grinberga devoted herself entirely to figurative painting . A photorealistic oeuvre emerged in the pictorial tradition of Dutch interior painting of the 19th century , in particular the works of the Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershøi , repeatedly with reminiscences of the impressive use of light by the Dutch baroque painter Jan Vermeer van Delft . With a precise brushstroke and the translucent painting technique that characterizes her , she captures the fleetingness of the moment, goes in search of the poetry of the everyday and materializes the sound of silence on the canvas. Individual objects, such as musical instruments or paintings by Vermeer, are subtly placed in the picture as allegorical symbols of the ephemeral and beautiful. A rich staffage is dispensed with in favor of the picture composition: the alternating interplay of light and shadow, the chiaroscuro , becomes the dominant moment, flowing transitions between light and dark tones create a harmonious ensemble, which from the art criticism in the paraphrase of " poetic painting "found its most concise expression. Her still lifes go beyond the mere depiction, overcome the brittle statics that cling to this genre. That magical realism , which found its master in Giorgio de Chirico's imagery, is also evident in Edite Grinberga's work. Edite Grinberga received a grant from the Santa Fe Art Institute in 2011 and was shown at national and international trade fairs such as Art Karlsruhe , Art Zürich and Art Miami . It is represented by the Friedmann-Hahn Gallery .

reception

“As with Vermeer , with Grinberga the room shown in the picture is a kind of stage that is constantly being used anew. As closed and almost distant as the scenery always appears, the room, which is reproduced close to life size, appears at least imaginatively accessible. . "

"With her feeling for this light, the artist masterfully captures moments, almost as if she wanted to capture dream sequences for a frozen moment."

- Iris Braun : world art

“The main role is played by empty space. A downright perfect setting for enigmatic narratives. [...] Her capacity for perfection takes her to the full. There is hardly a brushstroke on the finely glazed oil paintings, which shimmer between hyperrealism and film noir . "
