Edouard Manet (exhibition Wuppertal)
The Edouard Manet exhibition took place from October 24, 2017 to February 25, 2018 in the Von der Heydt Museum in Wuppertal . The overview show on Édouard Manet tried to show his “relationship to politics, worldview and society in France in the 19th century”. More than 100,000 visitors saw the exhibition.
The exhibition
The Manet show in the Von der Heydt Museum in Wuppertal was one of the few exhibitions in Germany that has so far been dedicated to this artist. Manet, who died at the age of 51, left behind a relatively small oeuvre with only around 450 paintings . Many museums only have one or a few works by the painter and rarely or not at all loan them out. In some cases this is not possible for conservation reasons, such as the large Mannheim version of The Execution of Emperor Maximilian of Mexico , and in some cases donors have forbidden the loan of works, such as the pictures in the Winterthur Oskar Reinhart collection "Am Römerholz" . In the preparation for the exhibition in Wuppertal there were further difficulties. Some pictures have already been confirmed for other themed exhibitions taking place at the same time. For example, the Kunsthaus Zürich presented the show Celebrated & Mocked in the overlapping period from November 2017 to January 2018 . French painting 1820–1880 , which also featured works by Manet. In addition, the Musée d'Orsay in Paris sent large parts of its own Manet holdings on a tour to Milan from March to July 2017 and did not want to loan these works again shortly afterwards. Ultimately, only the small-format still life The Lemon came from Manet's Musée d'Orsay to Wuppertal, and it was not on view at the exhibition in the Palazzo Reale in Milan . Other potential lenders may have been reluctant, as they had only made works available for the exhibition Manet - Seeing Manet's Portrait Portraits in the Hamburger Kunsthalle in 2016 . Before that, in German-speaking last 2002-2003 in the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart , the exhibition Edouard Manet and the Impressionists to see which mainly dealt with Manet's work from the 1870th In contrast to these thematically focused exhibitions, the aim of the Wuppertal exhibition was to show the whole of Manet, from his beginnings in Thomas Couture's studio to the works from the last months of his life.
Museum director Gerhard Finckh had previously organized a series of high-profile exhibitions on various impressionist artists . These included exhibitions on Pierre-Auguste Renoir , Claude Monet Alfred Sisley , Camille Pissarro , Edgar Degas and Auguste Rodin . The Manet show also featured works by these artists, an attempt to show Manet's work in the context of the work of his contemporaries. The museum was able to include some works from its own house, for example by Monet, Renoir or Manet's teacher couture, but some of the works also came from other houses, for example pictures by Frédéric Bazille or Gustave Caillebotte . The focus, however, was on the works of Èdouard Manet, of whom the Von der Heydt Museum itself has only two lesser-known pictures from his early work with Thistle and Der Fischer . With more than 40 loans of Manet paintings from numerous museums and collections, the Von der Heydt Museum was able to show an overview of his work, including early works such as Jupiter and Antiope, based on the Italian model, and pictures based on Spanish influence such as guitar and Spanish Hat showed. There were also several portraits of his wife Suzanne and his later sister-in-law Berthe Morisot , some pictures of the sea and a group of still lifes. In addition, there were pictures of modern life such as The Croquet Game , The Longchamp Racecourse or The Suicide and a number of portraits of women such as The Amazon or Lady with a Fan . Among the few major works in the exhibition were the paintings shown by Manet in the Salon de Paris The Artist and Beim Père Lathuille, outdoors . The journalist Michael Kohler wrote about the supposed lack of top works in art - Das Kunstmagazin : “Without ... the modern icons, the view of the second row of Manet's work becomes free. So works, while not passed into the history books, where the most important painters of the 19th century, but often equally dedicated enough dedication. "So, the well-known works such as found Olympic and Breakfast in the countryside , although only as reproductions of the paintings in the Exhibition, but could at least be shown as an etching in the original. In addition to a pastel picture by Manet, there were also some drawings and watercolors in the exhibition. Elsewhere, the exhibition deepened the topic of Manet and photography and showed, for example, pictures from the family album. The rarely seen compilations included a series of garden pictures from Rueil , or the portraits of Édouard Manet and Émile Auguste Carolus-Duran each created by the other . Accompanying the exhibition there was an introductory film and expert tours and a series of lectures were offered. In addition, an extensive exhibition catalog was published.
