Egbert Erich Louis von Berger (born December 26, 1823 in Stade , † March 30, 1878 in Hanover ) was a Prussian major general and commander of the 32nd Infantry Brigade .

Life

Egbert was a son of the Hanoverian lieutenant general Ludwig Heinrich Georg von Berger (1799-1858) and his first wife Charlotte, née von Marschalck (1800-1834).

Military career

After completing his training at a private school, Berger joined the guards regiment of the Hanoverian Army as a cadet on May 1, 1840 and was promoted to prime lieutenant by the beginning of September 1848 . During the revolution of 1848/49 he took part in the occupation of Altenburg and was promoted to adjutant of the 1st battalion on January 1, 1853 . After his promotion to captain , he was appointed company commander on November 1, 1856 . On May 27, 1864, Berger was transferred to the 2nd Infantry Regiment as a major , with whom he took part in the Battle of Langensalza in 1866 during the war against Prussia . For this he received the Knight's Cross First Class of the Ernst August Order . After the lost war, the Kingdom of Hanover was annexed by Prussia and the Hanoverian Army dissolved.

Therefore Berger joined the Prussian Army on March 9, 1867 . He was employed as a major and commander of the 2nd Battalion in the 1st Magdeburg Infantry Regiment No. 26 and was promoted to colonel by the end of June 1870 . During the mobilization on the occasion of the war against France , on July 18, 1870, he was commander of the 3rd combined Pomeranian Landwehr Regiment, which he led during the sieges of Strasbourg and Belfort as well as St. Germain, les Errues and Peroux. Awarded the Iron Cross II. Class, Berger was transferred to the army officers on March 20, 1871 and appointed commander of the 5th Pomeranian Infantry Regiment No. 42 on August 1, 1871 . He also received the Iron Cross 1st Class on September 19, 1871. In position à la suite of his regiment, he was transferred to Trier on July 13, 1874 as commander of the 32nd Infantry Brigade . In this capacity he was promoted to major general on July 27, 1874, before being put up for disposition on March 11, 1876 with the award of the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves and the statutory pension .

He died unmarried on March 30, 1878 in Hanover.
