One against the empire (original title: Il mondo di Yor ) is a fantasy film that the director Antonio Margheriti shot in 1983 based on an Argentinian comic book. German premiere was on March 16, 1984.

Story of the movie

In the unspecified distant future (the German trailer, however, speaks of "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" for marketing reasons), Yor, a hunter from the mountains, sets out to find out the secret of his origins. He is accompanied by his companion Ka-Laa, whom he rescued from the violence of brutal cavemen who unfortunately wiped out their peaceful tribe, and her fatherly friend Pag. On the way they must assert themselves against fire-worshiping desert dwellers, defend themselves against the attack of the vengeance-seeking survivors of the cavemen and kill a threatening giant lizard. Eventually they end up on a high-tech island, whose inhabitants are the survivors of the nuclear catastrophe that is responsible for the world falling back into prehistoric states. The ruler of the island calls himself The Most High and commands an army of androids on which his absolute power is based. He intends to populate the world with perfect beings, who are supposed to be a cross between humans and machines. For this purpose he wishes to dissect Yor in order to extract genetic material for these creations from him. The people of the island know, however, that Yor is in truth the son of an escaped rebel , whose return they have long been waiting for and now, with him at the helm, want to dare to rebel against the Most High. The uprising is successful, the island, including the Supreme and his androids, is destroyed by a nuclear explosion, while Yor and his companions and the few remaining islanders return to the mainland to lay the foundation for an acceptable future for humanity.

meaning

One against the Empire achieved a very high level of awareness because it is one of the most bizarre B-films among film buffs . The reason for this is the genre mix , which can easily be perceived as absurd : One against the Empire begins as a fantasy film with echoes of the barbarian genre shaped by the Conan films, to science fiction after a little more than half the time to turn over. The Supreme rules over an army of androids that made Darth Vader - cloning seems to be talking and, for no apparent reason, with the same machine-rattling voice like that character from Star Wars . The oddity is intensified by the clearly recognizable little effort with which the film was produced. An ordinary control center of a normal power plant , some of which is wood-paneled in the style of the 1970s , must represent the control center of the island, with a normal ivory-colored telephone clearly appearing in the picture several times . An “empire” of whatever kind does not appear, contrary to the German title. The peculiarity and ever-present cheapness of the film, which also comes up with a large number of plot holes, unresolved questions and obvious contradictions, have made the really serious one against the empire into one of the involuntarily comical B-films, including them, for example Plan 9 from outer space or Ator II - Belong to the invincible .

Director Margheriti about his film:

  • "I always have a lot of fun when I watch the film again, really a perfect party flick and that's actually how I always rated it."

criticism

“With IL MONDO DI YOR, Margheriti has succeeded in creating an entertaining and exciting action adventure that is unquestionably one of the highlights of Italian barbarian film art. There are hardly any boring moments, there is cracking and hissing in every corner, and Antonio also does not spoil his specialty - effect art. The dialogues, which were probably not overly top-heavy in the original version, were seasoned with a few tablespoons of pure delirium by the German dubbing. This would hardly look good on a Swedish drama, but here it is the salt in the soup! "

“You have to see it to believe it. This is one of those films that make the genre so irresistible (...). Only fans can see something like that, a critic would rightly dismiss it as sheer nonsense. "

- Peter Gaschler, in: Heyne SF-Magazin, Munich.

The lexicon of international films was less enthusiastic: "Uninteresting mixture of sandal adventure and science fiction that blatantly copies genre models."
