The 2010/11 season of the Austrian ice hockey league began in September 2010. The defending champion would have been ATSE Graz , which in 2010 won the championship for the second time in a row since its re-establishment. However, the ATSE had exercised its right to promotion and entered the National League in the 2010/11 season . With the farm team of the EC Graz 99ers , however, a club from Graz became champions.

Participating teams

Clubs of the 2010/11 season (as of September 2010)

On June 11, 2010 the results of the league meeting were announced. According to these discussions, the upper league will be played in the 2010/11 season with a large number of farm teams from the Bundesliga , with these farm teams being made up to a large extent of the U20 players from the various teams. The EC Wels and the hockey club “Die 48er” , which have withdrawn from the game, are no longer there .

The exit of EV Zeltweg

With the rise of ATSE Graz, the field of participants initially shrank to seven teams. At the beginning of April, however, reports about major problems at EV Zeltweg were published: there chairman Robert Weber was accused of having diverted a total of 700,000 to 800,000 euros from funds from the community of Zeltweg to finance outstanding invoices from the association. A result of the investigations is still pending. However, as a result of the events, the EV Zeltweg issued a press release on May 11, 2010, according to which the club had filed for bankruptcy due to the high level of debt, which meant that it was no longer possible to operate a combat team in the major league. The club's youth departments should, however, be secured by founding their own club. At the end of May it was announced that the club's outstanding debts should amount to between one and two million euros. In addition, since players were paid from illegal contributions, further claims cannot be ruled out.

mode

In the basic round, a three-fold round-trip round is played, with home rights being awarded in the third round based on the better placement from the first two rounds. This is followed by the playoffs, for which all eight teams are qualified and in the form of quarter-finals, semi-finals and final of the mode Best of Five will be played.

The season started on September 22, 2010.

Basic round

Table after 14 rounds

The first phase of the regular round ended with the 14th round on December 23, 2010. The field of participants showed a fairly large performance gap, but the farm teams and the regular teams were distributed relatively evenly across the table ranks. In addition to the front runner Kapfenberg Bulls, the junior teams of the Graz 99ers and the EC VSV were able to achieve a good record, while the EC KAC and the EHC Linz in particular had to struggle with problems. While the Klagenfurters were able to stabilize their performance and gradually narrowed the gap to the top ranks, the Linzers lost the connection in the course of the basic round and could only book one game against the 99ers through a criminal verification in the second half of the season. The Salzburg Oilers, who had finished the first season last year in last place, established themselves in the midfield.

Final result of the basic round

Based on the table status after fourteen match days or a round trip, the home right was awarded for the last first half of the season. The picture in the table remained essentially unchanged, although the VSV were able to conquer second place thanks to six wins from the seven encounters. The Capitals narrowly overtook the Salzburg Oilers and thus secured home rights for the first playoff round.
