Eitel Friedrich von Hohenzollern (1582–1625)
Eitel Friedrich von Hohenzollern (born September 26, 1582 in Sigmaringen , † September 19, 1625 in Iburg Castle ) was a Curia Cardinal and Bishop of Osnabrück .
Life
Eitel Friedrich was born as the fourth son of Count Karl II of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen and his first wife Euphorosyne von Öttingen-Wallerstein. The family was raised to the rank of imperial count in 1623 .
Eitel Friedrich received minor orders at the age of six , studied at the Jesuit University in Rome , later known as the Pontifical Gregorian University . 1610 dean of the Cologne cathedral chapter , 1612 cathedral provost , he was soon one of the most important advisors to the Cologne elector Ferdinand of Bavaria . His nomination as Archbishop of Salzburg in 1619 failed. Elevated to cardinalate by Pope Paul V in January 1621 , Cardinal Hohenzollern did not receive until November 1621 under his successor Gregory XV. the red hat and was in December d. J. installed as Cardinal Priest of San Lorenzo in Panisperna . He initially remained cardinal to the Curia and became a member of the Propaganda Fide mission congregation founded in 1622 .
On April 18, 1623, Cardinal Eitel Friedrich was elected Bishop of Osnabrück, but resided in Iburg Castle . It was the first Catholic bishop of the monastery since 1574 . In 1624 he took possession of the Diocese of Osnabrück . He began to carry out more extensive reforms: In 1624 he introduced the Gregorian calendar . In the same year he gave the Jesuits the school Carolinum . With the introduction of the office of vicar general , he initiated an administrative reform in the diocese leadership. His reform work was continued after his death by Cardinal Franz Wilhelm von Wartenberg .
