Elliot Griffin Thomas

Elliot Griffin Thomas (born July 15, 1926 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania , † February 28, 2019 in Timonium , Maryland ) was an American clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Saint Thomas in the US Virgin Islands .

Life

Elliot Griffin Thomas grew up on Tortola Island , part of the British Virgin Islands . He studied pharmacy and was a military pharmacist for the US Army in Frankfurt am Main and Munich . He then worked as a pharmacist on the island of Saint Thomas and in Erie , Pennsylvania.

In 1957 he converted to the Roman Catholic Church . In 1982 he began studying theology to become a priest . He was ordained a priest on June 6, 1986 by the Bishop of Saint Thomas, Seán Patrick O'Malley, OFMCap .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Saint Thomas on October 30, 1993. The Archbishop of Washington James Aloysius Cardinal Hickey donated him episcopal ordination on December 12 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Seán Patrick O'Malley OFMCap, Bishop of Fall River , and Donald James Reece , Bishop of Saint John's-Basseterre .

On June 29, 1999, John Paul II accepted his early resignation.
